I like to change cam. + time it. Then the testride to feel the difference.

Custom grinds should be easy these day, probably dont have to grind a master.. just move the grinding head with a stepper..

I had WebCam send me some of their lobe specs.  I picked from those and have them grind me a custom cam for my auto.  It wasn't exactly easy to get the specs off them, but in the end I got enough to make a decision from.  Just a thought.

37 years since we met.  Last restore started  2012, 2014 I took her out on the streets again. I have to make up for all I did to her during the 80's. Cost some but worth it. We have so many memories and adventures together
Compare with restoring a wife... New tits, face lift, fat reduction. New bushing if giving birth several times ... 8)

Doing it despite there are younger and much hotter alternative available for less...

Exactly!!
Or nag about problems that should never be resolved. I have met several women that loved to talk about their problems. I could see the real root cause and problem solved... What a mistake.... " you don't listen ..."   bla bla..
While I have had only one bike, many women has passed thru my life. Boring to live without them too :)

Same on your side too? Important to let them  think that the man  ???listen....
The one I live together with now is OK. But still a woman! :)

I do not need to change woman as I change cam nowadays! ;)

I have to work more with my bike so the new cam can go in and get the numbers.

Don't we wish we could make a few simple adjustments to the women to improve the outlook and performance?! A few degrees advance could do wonders... adjust the timing. A new cam for higher performance... Give em bigger pistons or more of them. WITHOUT ALL THE FEEDBACK.......

A recent trick I found to be enlightening was to be with one that neither of us understood the others SPOKEN language... No arguing. No BS. Maybe we just need to swap for a while! My credentials - I only speak English. Any non-English speakers out there. Send em over and pack a new cam in their suitcase too  ;)

Constant flow of chocolate, flowers, shoes, purses and handbags...thats the common stuff to keep them happy and keep the "oil pump" flowing.
Small bore with good lubrication also important. We with CB's have understood that decades ago, go asian... :P

Womens "problems" are usually only something they like to talk about, not really solve. Enough that we  do as they say, listen not more. (Except for real tragedies that some might have encountered.)
Most important is not to never argue, become friends again is vital. If not skip it. This is what I have learned during soon 40 years of "using" them.

Compare cams.
Old RC295 copy I found and mounted last summer vs new DP315 which look a little bit fatter when comparing them. I hope it will give more fun between 8000-10.000, but still OK at low :) Lets see what the lower lift, incr duration and overlap will do.

Numbers tripple checked.  0 lash achived by tighten the valve adj screw until the dial indicator needle moved a little.

Recommended lash is .012" (0.3mm)! Really? Loose 0.3mm lift?
No thanks. I set the In, Ex lash to 0.15mm (~.006")

I'm curious to hear the idle with that late IN close. Open earlier than 34° might not be the way either.
If the cam must have an open 4-1 due to the overlap. I'll start with 4-4 HM300 replica with no diffusers.

Set them at .012, it will be fine and not too noisy.
 Plus, its the recommended setting....
My theory ..is that the clearance allows lots of oil under the rocker pad....

Me too! :) ... and the following years.... ;)
Those years were very relaxing with less global problems affecting us here.

I thought it was to let valve sit longer in seat and transfer the heat to the seat...especially when using the upper rpms, other side of the red line where it turns green again on the CB750 tacho I have.

More oil under rocker arm pad is another good thing. All cam installations must like that. This cam has not that abrupt opening and closing curves.

The data of the 315 has plenty of overlap. Megacycle 125-20 (photo) that has very fat lobes has even less overlap. DP315 look slim when comparing them.

BUT, the duration of the 315 cam is most likely designed for the huge lash of .012" (0.3mm closest gauge I have), which is double than other hot cams).
I'll change the lash if engine runs bad in need of less duration.

I have not calculated any numbers, IN might open like the other hot cams that is in the 29-25° range @ 0 lash (5-10° later) and overlap will be less too.
I need to check with different lash. The cam might work better with more lash. I guess it will when it is deigned that way.

I have set the lash with valve cover open after I timed the cam. Easier to see when rockers are on the base circle without fiddling with a small bent feeler gauge inside the small tappet holes from one side only when valve cover is mounted.

Now 0.15mm (.0666"), next is 0.20mm (0.0787")  0.25mm (0.098"), 0.30mm (0.0118").
Change valve lash is one way to tune the cam.

Lash of IN vs EX different, the only way to make difference between IN and EX on a SOHC.

OK, I'll changed my mind when writing this. The overlap cannot work well on the street with 4-4 as it is now. I'll change to 0.30mm.  :o
Sh_t, I have to to the adjustments thru the tappet holes when  valve cover is mounted and most likely leak free.
Engine is in frame. Cut frame part not yet mounted (Frank's clamped weld free design)

I mounted the engine in frame alone. Lifted the engine without studs, cyl, head, clutch. All assembled with crankcase in frame.
What a different with new engine bolts with good threads and not banana shaped long bolts.
I have to start engine today so I'll start to adj the valves.
Back to the garage!!!! :)

EDIT: I finally understand why some experienced guys time the cam with correct running lash. Duration and overlap will then be seen as it will be.

I can set stockers with a straight feeler... With the thicker guage bend about 13 mm to 45 degrees... Be easy to set.

Yes, I had to bend the feeler gauge. I have a smaller short one I have used before in the 80's. Now bending the thicker one. I used the 0.25mm (light fit) when it bent a little and might be in an angle making more lash. The new valves (+ guides ) have new lash caps and lash might become bigger after some use.
Did not complete today.  Start it tomorrow.
