I like it with the stock tank.  I assume blacSOHC has already worked out his suspension mount points, geometry and adequate support for the new subframe.

Yes, I took measurements from the stem to the stock mounting points for the rear springs and plan on getting it pretty much exactly the same.  I bought the mounting kit from Cognito so it should be a clean and straightforward weld in solve.

On the support bars, I am going back and forth on whether I want to recreate them in the factory spot (creating the large 'triangle' area) or mount them higher up on the bar behind the motor creating a shallower/sleeker triangle.  If that makes any sense...


I will mock up some photoshops soon  8)

Yes, I am going to try to get a little creative with it i think.. there are two dents on it, one on each side in almost the same place, so I am still trying to figure out a game plan that addresses that.

One idea I have been kicking around is cutting out the whole 'black part' of each side and swapping them to the other side.  It would take some massaging and fab work, but I think it might be a cool (and unique?) look instead of just having the knee dents only at the back of the tank.

Just use a decent tube, not cheap tubing. I'd suggest DOM 1/8" wall. Stock tubing is less than 1/16" wall thickness.

I have chromoly '4130' from Cliff.  It is really heavy duty stuff.  WAY stronger than the stock paper mache  tubing honda used.

Haha gotcha!  The problem with my bike is that everything is ALMOST nice.  It's right on the point where it makes you nervous when you get the saw out, but unsatisfied in its current state..

Question: why cut off the subframe if you are going to replace it with support in the stock location (aka #4)?  Was the stock subframe tube damaged?

From a aesthetic sense, I like the cleaner look of 1 and 2, but for something like this, function needs to dictate form.  You will be putting a fair load on that subframe.  1 and 2 may place too much stress on the new tubes, even if they are chromoly.

Very true. The subframe is slightly concave as to the frame rails. Are you fabricating your own shock mounts or using pre-fab mounts?

Yep, I bought the mounting hardware and plates from Devin, I just hope the angle that the plates were cut at provide me with enough tilt to line up and accommodate something like #1

I agree that #1 looks the best.  I'm going to get the length of the loop set up and welded on then I will try a few more mocks for the support bars.


I also ordered a tap set today so I will be able to get working on my Motogadget ideas :)

A trip to a bolt and fastener store with the M button could answer the question of coarse. Are you threading the M button into a plate/triple tree or just putting it through a hole where the backside is accessible for a nut?

Would you be able to achieve a strong enough structure if you instead of bracing it as shown go to a box section coming back from the original frame of sufficient thickness and cross section to eliminate the need for the additional bracing and gusset it as well as create a cross bracing in a geodesic design to make it rigid as well?  Or, are you going to have to have a triangular brace tube as you are showing?
Just wondering if you could think further out of the box.  Naturally, the end of the loop would probably need to be a tube or similar as bending into a curved hoop in box section isn't easy or practical. It can be done, just not ideal. You could even take the hoop and face it with a flat section if you wanted to match the profile of the hoop with a section of U channel with it cut and welded so the inside is a half round and outside face is a box section.  That would further strengthen that part of the hoop, but merely for asthetics.

If you have access to fabricating equipment that can bend thick walled tubing, then go for it...

That is very nice but not necessary.  I thought the kit came with 1.0 1.5 and 1.75.  It was advertised poorly and I thought I was covering my basses.  I'm just going to head to a Home Depot or something and buy a single one.  Thanks for the offer though!  8)

Just for clarification: m-buttons are not what you're using. The m-button is a wiring concentrator. The m-switch is their momentary button product. But they come in housings. Are you buying generic momentary switches or removing the MotoGadget momentary switched from their housings and installing a plate?

Yep, that is my only concern as well.  I am going to get the bike all mocked up and put back together to see how clearance looks.  There wont be anything under the rear loop (tail light is integrated into the bar), so unless the tire hits the frame I should be alright... If not I will sell these springs and get ones that are an inch longer.
