Another mini update...

I have been in communication with RaceTech and am going to get my bike down to their shop in the next week or so to get a custom spring made with adjustable spring, dampening and ride-height.  I will officially have more into the suspension than I purchased the bike for... This this should (better) ride nice!  8)

I am not a conventional note taker... this is what I wrote down while talking with RaceTech  ???

PROGRESS (but only a little)

My girlfriends family got me a Miller Digital Elite welding helmet for Christmas, this thing is awesome.  It has something called Xmode, which detects not only the welding arc, but the presence of electromagnetic energy and will darken, so basically even when you aren't directly looking into the arc, it will work properly.  Lots of settings and buttons im still figuring out, but its working great so far!



Back to the bike...

I got the new triple tree mocked up on the bike, looks awesome on there, but I noticed it doesnt sit as low on my bike, well I guess it is the same just more noticeable. which got me thinking, Is my top race for my tapered bearing down all the way? I think i got it all the way down but am not sure.  Anyone else have All Balls on their Cb550?




On to the frame/rearsets...

I finally took care of the tubing where I cut the subframe off.  Using some 1" tubing I shaped and filled the holes. I also got the file out any made all the waviness disappear (my back still hurts).





I saved my passenger peg mounts and found a way to get them to use them for the rearset mounts.. I think it looks cool in a "factory but different" way.  Ill get pics uploaded once I get them tacked up!

How she sits now!  I just have to get some more Chromoly tubing to remake the subframe supports and some flat stock for the mono-shock mounts then I drop it off at RaceTech for them to make me a custom spring!



Questions (because I always have a million):

1: Is my top race all the way down into the stem?
2: On the rearsets, is there a 'line' I need to get them lined up with, or is just "parallel" with the frame with a straight shot forward to the shifter area etc good enough?

I have the same Miller helmet, it is very nice  ;) Looks like you already spent some time "personalizing" it  8)

I don't see a picture regarding your rear set/foot peg positioning. If asking solely for information purposes, align the outboard face of the peg with the outboard edge of the tubing. That will allow you a straighter shot with whatever shift rod you will use. Worst case, you can buy an offset shift arm to install on the splined shaft. Fast From the Past sells various components for rear set customizations.

Bah, not sure what happened to the pic of the rear set, I'll snap another one when I get back to my shop.

Regarding the top race, I'll do a little more investigating and see if there is room to move it down but I think the cb550's sit up pretty high like that :/  at least in the research I have done online.  I will get a bright light in there to see if there is any room also.  The good thing is I have room for plenty of threads due to the slimmer profile of the cognito piece.

Yes I will be powdercoating.  I assumed that I could mask off the ends of the stem and be alright?  Are you suggesting that I should bang them back out before I powdercoat?  I haven't done a frame before but I assumed I would either have to mask that area off to keep the powdercoat off of that area to make room for the race or mask it off to keep it off of the race itself..?

They like them bare. They're going to degrease then blast that thing with AOX or steel shot, then they're going to pre bake at 400f or so to make any embedded oils outgas. Then spray with powder, then bake. Anything that can trap or hold oil or grease should be removed and any bearing surfaces are in harms way. IMO.

Ask your powdercoater. They all have their preferences.

If you didn't grease them and the neck is clean they may say "NBD" and mask as you say. Ask them before you fish them out if you find they don't tap out easily.

And if you do tap them out, use a brass drift from the "other end" of the neck to drive them. Also, many shops will either tape off or blast over your VIN tag. Best to drill out the rivets and reinstall afterwards. If they're a decent shop, then they can powder over your engraved VIN # without fear of making it unreadable. It (VIN #) transmits through most powder coats.

Thanks, I was also curious about that.  I will be sure to take lots of photos of the process so if anything ever comes up I can at least point to some photographs of these areas (if that would do any good I'm not sure, but I can hope).


Speaking of powder coat and prep, I have recently been going over the frame with a medium file to smooth out the areas where I have welded or cut off any tabs. I am not an experienced metal worker but this has had good results so far.  Are there any other methods of frame/metal finishing that will help get it smooth for powder coat?

^^^ This. If you happen to have an air compressor and angle grinder, 2" Rolocs with Green ScothBrite discs do a very nice cleanup after filing too.

Im lucky that my GF's dad is a big time gear head.  He is INSANELY knowledgable, has the tools and knowhow to use them, too.. He did a lot of the shopping this year haha

Yep, he is going to drive it for a while naturally aspirated at 600hp then put the blower on it...  :-X
If you can't fix it with a hammer, it's an electrical problem... If it's an electrical problem, it's Cal's problem.
