She's back from powdercoat!  It's a Tiger Dryloc series 38 color called Greco. 
I am really digging it, but it has a bit of a red tint, depending on how the light hits it.  I may have to repaint the tank.

The original plan was to keep the same green from the first post, but now I am thinking about a reddish root beer brown.

Just lapped in the valves.  Need to pick up some little bits to clean up the ports. Then the head can go back together.

It was overcast all day today so it's hard to really see the colors.  Seat is dark green.  I am going to remove the vinyl and buff the sh!t out of the paint.  We'll see how it comes out.



I picked this little guy up at a VW swap meet a few weeks back for $10.  I'm going to create a little bracket off of the horn mount to hold it.

Because I'm stupid.   I really don't know what i was thinking.  I could have done it in black, as well, but the paint is OK. 
I want it to be black to keep separation between the bronze of the frame and the bronze of the wheels. They are not the same.

So, the chips in my case were on the ignition side.  They were welded up, but cast is hard to weld and it looked like crap. Should have grabbed a pic.



I used a skim coat of JB Weld and filed it down.  Now I am doing a second coat.  Gotta wait for it to cure so I can file again.  Then I get to add primer and paint.

I've never tried filing JB weld.  Sanding is my preferred method.

I just cleaned up the casting marks.  I used little dremel bits, some diamond tip things and a grinding stone that is really tiny and shaped like a cone.  Then washed it out really well and blew it out with air to help dry it
Didn't do much, so I didn't bother with pictures.  Plus, I got too excited and put the valves back in, already. 

Head is good to go, now.

I tried to sand it first, but there was aluminum from the weld that was sticking up, as well.  I used a few different sanding disks and will probably use them again to finish it up, but the filing did a great job.
Edit:  I used two bar files that are pretty fine, as far as those kinds of files go. Don't have the numbers on the file.

I went back last night and filed it down again.  It looks good.  Final sand will come soon and then I will paint the case and work on reassembly.

Gotcha.  According to Mike Rieck, the 650 head is inherently more efficient than either the 750 or 550 heads, and the stock valves do not need to be up-sized.  A little deshrouding should help, as you've done.

Ever get a bunch of stuff done and feel soooooo proud of yourself only to discover that you are a complete git? 

I got the engine all painted, new seal on the oil pan, new filter and seals.  Just about to put the pistons on and then the cylinders and  the head...

True enough.   I was thinking about it while putting the gasket on the oil filter bolt.

Everything is painted, gasket surfaces are clean.  Just need to redo the head this evening and I can start assembly tomorrow.

OK, heads are fixed.  I figured out why they call the little things "keepers".   It's because those slippery little bastards do the best they can to "keep" you from getting the head back together.

Because things were looking too good, I went a dropped a piston circlip down into the case.  Magnet can't find it.  About to flip it on to its back and pull the oil pan.  Fingers crossed.

Praise sweet little 8lb 6oz baby Jesus!  I found it when I pulled the drain pan and pushed on the spring hanging out down there! 


Now, base gasket...  Dry or thin coat of HondaBond or maybe just copper gasket spray?

I'm an idiot.  I jacked up an oil ring and when I couldn't get the cylinder off, I lost my patience and broke a bunch of fins.   


I don't have a good spare set of cylinders.  I do have a spare, but, if I use it, I need to bore it.   

So I either order 1 new ring set and ride around with chipped fins to show my lack of judgement or I pony up and have another set bored and decked and buy the crusinimage set on ebay.
