Better consider using a dust mask the next time your polishing parts too. The stuff getting in your lungs is not healthy.  Stuff that goes in rarely comes out, gets imbedded in the tiny air sacks of the lungs.

Yeah, probably a good idea, but I was wet sanding the whole time.  There was not a lot of dust floating around.  It all stuck to my hands and the rags.

Good news.  The main hub store for Oreilly's sells plug wire by the foot!  Swinging by after work to pick some up!  Might be able to get this thing over to Rockers V Mods after all!

 And bad news. The exhaust I had laying here, 4 into 1 isn't fitting.  So, no exhaust for the 650 engine.  Gotta start looking for one

It hits the oil filter housing, the number 3 pipe does not line up with the head, right and the end of the header points down.

It's nice, but still almost 600 bucks in US $. 


I wonder how those 550 stainless pipes will work if I modify the part to match the head.

Interesting Kerker.  I'm not certain as to the description.  The 1979 and 1980 head are identical but different from the 1981 and 1982.

I think that the one I have is a kerker.  It's pretty similar, it's just been tweaked.  I am going to figure this out, one way or another.

Anyone know off the top of their head how much taller the 650 engine is than the 550?

Haha,  no way dude.  I just put a rebuild kit in the carb.  Need to pick up a battery and some grips and it's a runner.
Think I am going to go black and OD green on it and add hard cases to the sides.

Sorry, no new updates. I was out of town last weekend and I just haven't messed with the bike. 
I was thinking about exhaust options.  The 550 exhaust is about 4mm smaller outside diameter. 
The delkavic exhaust uses 1.5mm stainless,  which is pretty thin compared to the stock headers. 
I think it already has a similar ID as the 650, but how hard would it be to use a tubing stretcher to bump it up 3-4mm? 
Pretty sure the 650 engine is less than 10mm taller, so it should fit on the bike pretty well.  I think...

Kemp at Ripple Rock Racers has been working closely with Hindle to produce high performance systems for a lot of vintage bikes. They're sold in Canadian dollars to so that makes them extremely competitive to other products.

Looks to be a very good option, $540 US [plus ship] for the SS header with shorty muffler.

Or $425 for just the header [if you have a muffler?]

I have been looking at the Hindle for $425 -$540 plus shipping from Canada.
The Delkavic that I think could easily be modified to fit on the 650 $240 - $350 - free shipping
Mac (don't really want that one, but more in my price range) $299-$399 depending on finish - free shipping
Winning Exhaust (Kerker) $500 free shipping
Somehow bend and modify the one I have to work (doubt it)

So, based on price alone, if I can stretch the Delcavic just 3-4mm then I could get the header and baffle that for $240, less than half the cost of the Hindle or the Header and muffler for only $340.  That's still $200 cheaper before shipping
And if it works, I feel like I would be doing a public service to all 650 owners by giving them another inexpensive exhaust option.
it really can't be that hard to stretch, can it?

If so, I would be afraid it would first not seal well to the head as the exhaust ports would be at a slight angle if you are buying a 550 exhaust to fit the 650 head. The other thing I would be considering is if it would cause a crack over time.

The diameter. Stretching it a few mm to match the 650 port. It already lines up the same.
