Help Tail hoop for cafe 450 fabrication
« on: January 24, 2016, 09:14:11 AM »
Hello,

I am in the middle of a café/mod/re-build on my 73 cb450. I bought the bike after someone started the project and now in the process of finishing it. The frame had been cut about 2 inches behind the rear shock mounts and I'd like to fit a seat/fender support hoop. ID on the frame is 13/16 and I'd like to slide inside a few inches using stainless tubing and bend to fit radius of café seat so it all looks finished. I visited many weld/pipe shops in my town and all say the radius (3 inch +/- as it is 8" outside of frame to outside of frame)  is too tight for them to bend.
Is there someone on this site that would fabricate this part?
Any help is appreciated.

Look around and see if you can find a sissy bar you are willing to cannibalize to compare with what you want.

They can get used, for a pattern in SS if nothing else.

Got a picture of what you came up with?  Your ideas may help others with similar issues.

I hope you accounted for rear wheel travel when you welded in that hoop.  The CB450 rear wheel travels at full deflection up above the two frame rails requiring you to use a hoop that has an upward bend to give you enough clearance so the tire doesn't smash into the bottom of the hoop when you roll over a pot hole or speed bump.  Without the upward bend you will be riding a dangerous design that will bite your ass sooner or later... :o
