Gas tank. Sandblast or Use Anti-Rust paint?
« on: January 24, 2016, 01:43:02 PM »
Hi all,

So I have an original paint tank on my 1975 CB550K1 that I really love the look of. The top painted surface is in real good shape and the inside is really clean. The underside is in okay shape but has a fair amount of surface rust. I am too anal retentive to not worry about the surface rust even though I can't see it when it's on the bike. I want to do something about it. Here are the two options I am considering:

1) Take the tank to a local sandblaster and have them clean off the bottom surface of the tank. Then I would prime and paint it gloss black with a Rustoleum or other spray paint someone recommends.

2) I found a starter kit that says you apply it right on top of rusted surfaces and it stops the rust chemically then you paint on top of that. See Amazon link:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00J594B5C/ref=sr_ph?ie=UTF8&qid=1453671626&sr=1&keywords=por+15

Any thoughts? What would you do preserve the top painted surface and clean/treat/repair the bottom surface? I can send a photo tomorrow of the tank...

That rustle rust converter is great stuff.  It will stabilize the rust.  I have used it and it works great

I hade rust in my tank this year and the guys here really helped out.
mine was on the inside and just plain cleaning vinegar worked for me. Also I used toilet bowel cleaner on the rest of the bike were rust became an issue.
