in an ideal world i could find a wrecked bike and use the entire rear section with suspension. While the cb550 would be a viable option, I want the gsxr swap. something about its challenge and engineering to make it all work gets me going. 

I have a rear section for sale but its off of a 2005 R6 if you're interested. Wasn't wrecked I just took the front off to use on my project.

You can easily modify the GSXR arm with little concern, I have a GSXR1100J {1988} arm thats been shortened, its about 40mm longer than stock now, {25mm=1 inch}, so its less than 2 inches longer than the stock Honda arm. Its a great arm to mod as its a bolt in item, same axle size and pivot bolt size..



This picture is of a GSXR750 {1986} swingarm shortened to fit a 550... The 750 arm is already shorter so its an even easier mod...

The main reason the early GSXR arm are so good is that they are a bolt in item, no mods to the pivot or pivot section of the arm, the Yamaha arm is not a bolt in item...

Small update: Have a guy coming Saturday for the Radian. Hopefully all goes well with that and I will be purchasing parts once the money is deposited. Looks like Punxsutawney Phil didnt see his shadow so spring is coming quick. I better get to work haha. Hope to have the majority of the bike done by May. Yes. I am ambitious.

Sold the radian yesterday. Guy ended up dropping it on the way home  nothing major but it needs some fixing. Just placed an order for some parts and will be buying the cognito parts soon as well. Very excited to get the project going again.

To add to a couple things. Going to a gsxr front, I would go with a gps speedo. Those cheap sensor ones don't work well at all and have you running wires that you can't hide. Picture attached before I added the hoop etc.

Very cool bike! I ordered a speedo already. I have used the sensor speedos before. A bit tricky to dial in but I have some experience. The wires I can deal with for the time being. I just do not have the money for something like that at this time. I am trying to keep the budget on track. Which is extremely difficult!

Ricks rectifier, coils, headlight and levers came in. Placed my order with Cognito for rear sets, bracket, stem, top triple, linkages. have the speedo in transit and the rest of the ignition. picked up some sheet metal and tube for the cowl and seat hoop. rolling along nicely! spending vday mocking up the bike to take measurements for the rear suspension and hopefully get the hoop done and mock up the cowl and electronics tray.

Got some work done on the bike saturday. not a lot but i started mocking up the tail section. This is a pretty rough idea. I wanted to get a visual to tweak and measure and then plug into google sketchup for a model. The entire section needs to be shortened and I may curve the seat a bit. cowl will be shortened, heightwise as well. also set the headlight to get a visual. I love it!



Swung by the IMS in chicago on sunday and met Evan from Speakeasy Motors in New York. Cool dude and he brought a badass ducati arm swapped 750 he built for a customer.


Spotted this beauty as well. Nice cafe on display for Progressive Insurance. complete with a Kott tank.

FYI - the cafe "complete with a Kott tank" IS a Kott bike -- his seat, tank emblem, oil tank and plating touches.  Engine likely build by his engine guy in Cerritos.

It looks beefy in there! Im glad i went with the gsxr arm. Its less weight then stock. And the Kott bike. Learn something new everyday  I just figured it was his tank lol. Its funny, I go to bike show that has mostly new bikes and harleys with some choppers and a stretched gsxr or 2 and these were the only 2 bikes i liked haha

Small update over the weekend. Fixed a slight hole in frame from the passenger pegs. Cognito parts came in. Ordered a 2006 R1 shock for the rear since it was a quarter of the price and the Gixxer guys said it will work. Hopefully have the suspension wrapped up by the end of the week. Pressed the new stem and bearings in. Decided to go with a fiberglass cowl so that i can achieve better quality as i cannot shape metal easily at my house. Also hope to have the hoop done this week and i can start making the electronics tray and oil tank.

2 questions for you guys.

I am not the biggest fan of Anti-Gravity.  Of the lithium-ion batteries, they seem to be more fragile.  If you get a short in the reg/rec, they burst.  No bueno.

If you are committed to Li-Io, then I would recommend Shorai.  Remember you will need a special charger for Li-Io.  A Battery Tender will not play well with these batteries.

The Li-Io tend to hold their charge well, but if you have a little bit of parasitic drain, they will run out.  If they get beyond a certain voltage, there is not reviving them -- unlike conventional gel batteries.

With LED lights you will not need a huge battery.

Take a look at the Form Factor #1 or #2 batteries compared with the Form Factor #5 (which is the stock CB replacement).  You can shrink down to a much smaller space and still get 18AH and 270CCA.

So i have the r1 shock sitting on the counter when i got home from work. 30 minutes of grinding and it bolts right in to the linkage on the gsxr. One step closer!

Any Lithium battery can be mounted in various orientations as they are "dry" batteries. Shorai batteries are Lithium Iron (LiFe) not Lithium Ion.

The stock battery is 12Ah and about 180CCA is memory serves correctly. The 14A2 is equal to the task of electric start and 12Ah capacity. The Dynatek coils should also be 5.0 Ohms, not 3.0 Ohms. There is much debate about their draw (using 3.0 Ohms) over-taxing the charging system. LED headlights do reduce the system load, but its still better to use a full capacity battery as the sizing is no longer a premium with a Shorai.
