Steering Lock Key Question
« on: January 25, 2016, 08:22:48 AM »
My project bike has a key that fits ignition and seat lock. Should it be the same key for the steering lock or was this always a different key?

I am hoping it's the same key and that  my steering lock is just a bit rusted/gummed with crud  (I didn't want to try and force anything in case I break the only key I have !!)

Thanks all

Paul the key should fit the steering lock also. Spray just a little lubricant into the cylinder that should help things.

Any key that fits in the slot works for my seat, ignition switch and lock. I think it's an awesome feature, as I misplace or loose keys. It's an easy way to loose more if you leave a key on a group of keys in the ignition while riding, they all fall out.

I think if you take the cover off the fork lock the key number is on the face of the cylinder. May not have to take the cover off, ntitoi. If you're not the original owner, who knows? Yes they should all be keyed the same.  There are places that sell keys, search and Google HondaKeys. For a spare.

All three were keyed the same. If either the ignition or seat lock needed replacement, some people get both without getting the steering lock, so it might be keyed differently. But they also get crud up there that can jam them up.

OR they get all three as a OEM replacement set, and not knowing how to get the fork cylinder out, only change the two easy ones. Thinking they will get to it, someday.

I do the same with my seat locks. I remove the brass pins so it just looks like a lock but really only serves as a latch. I would think the same could be done for the steering lock, but I am not familiar with the earlier models, my K8 steering lock is incorporated into my ignition switch.

Hi Paul. The steering lock on my KO just would not work even thought the numbers matched the key. I sprayed wd40 into the lock and it made no difference. Tried the steering lock again 6 months later and it worked like a charm. I don't think it had ever been used since the bike was made in 1970.
Also you are probably aware but, you do have to push the key upwards when it is in the lock and then turn it with the steering on full sideways  turn.

Makes it pretty convenient. I can't remember if in the 35 yrs that I've had this bike that the locks were ever secure, a nail file works like a charm, I like it.
