Almost a 76 CB750F owner...
« on: February 02, 2016, 08:53:24 PM »
Hi all,

I have an offer in on a 76 CB750f, that's been sitting for around 20 years. Guy says he just had it started but only on 2. Says it needs new points. Looks to be in OK shape but needs a good overhaul to get it road worthy.

-Needs tires
-Front caliper rebuilt
-Exhaust looks to be off a 77-78 F w/ patch job clamp holding on
-Dent in front rim and fender
-Has bad black paint job
-Look like some mystery plastic wire junction box mounted to frame, next to horn, below the steering stem. Looks out of place but has Honda logo on it. Wonder if this might be a clue of bad wiring?

Offered $1400, does this seem fair?

Welcome from a 550F owner.   Pretty sure the black box is stock, it's a junction box for the wiring.

Without seeing pics, hard to comment on value but $1400 doesn't sound outrageous.

Any rust in the gas tank?  How do the carb float bowls look??    Good luck!

There is some rust in the tank. Didn't think to pop a bowl off but will do that when I go to close the deal.

Looks to be in decent shape.   Funky aftermarket bars (handle and crash) and sissy bar, will look much better once all that extra metal is taken off!

You can see the black box I'm referring to in this photo.

The junction box is standard on the 75/76F.

Ok, so where's a better place to put it? I'm thinking a rewire will be in order.

Wish I had a good answer for that. Keep in mind all the wires that connect in there are a certain length for that reason. I have a nice oil cooler I'd like to install there but......

I have not contemplated making a custom harness since both of mine are stock based. Maybe you could swing it around back. Cut and re-weld the tab that it attaches to. Perhaps a 77/78F harness and customize the other wiring that attaches to it in the headlight bucket.

If you are doing a custom build, just do a simple wiring job and omit it. The 750 K models dont have it.

After I get her running right I'd like go cafe style. The mods that I do will keep within the original design and look. By using parts from various cb750 years for a true style.

I'm excited to get working on this old girl and look forward to all the help I'll get here.

My F1s have the same wiring junction box.  That box hides the wiring connections from the main wiring harness to the headlight bucket.  To remove it you would have to find somewhere to hide the wiring connections or rewire to go straight through from the main harness to the headlight bucket without the connectors.  I rewired my F1 with a relay so the headlight current does have to go through the starter switch, which was falling apart.  Pressing the starter button opens the headlight circuit so it doesn't draw current when you are trying to spin the starter (like the stock start button does).  The handlebars are not stock.
