Need advice on painting carhood for cheap
« on: January 27, 2016, 02:47:34 PM »
Greetings. My friends carhood is in need of repair. It's a hyundai accent so the hood is about 3 feet by 2 feet. Best price quote I could find locally to paint it was $350. I was thinking about stripping the paint that's left with aircraft stripper. I want to go with sraay max 2k paint because the reviews on them are solid and the pictures look professional and I've spray painted and wet sanded a ton of stuff in the past.

But I don't want to buy stuff I don't need or not have enough paint. Which primer should I go with once I'm down to bare metal?

I wanted to go with this for the base coat: http://www.66autocolor.com/SprayMax-Aerosol-Base-Coat-Automotive-Spray-Paint-p/spm1k-custompaint.htm

and this for the clear coat: http://www.66autocolor.com/Spray-Max-Semi-Gloss-Clear-coat-Aerosol-3680067-p/spm-3680067.htm

Just don't know what primer to get and how many cans to buy. Also does everything look ok?

Thanks

Did you try looking for a replacement, same color, at a junkyard?

I wouldn't paint an auto hood w/ spray cans,be better to use a spray gun and mix up your own paint;I need to learn how to mix paint as I've got no experience with that part of it.

I worked in a body shop for a while.

Usually for repaint jobs we just scuffed the old paint and sprayed over it, that was the easiest way.  I painted a bumper for Camry myself at home using sandable primer and exact match spray from Autozone and clear coat from TSC - Meijer is the brand I believe.

Not hard, but PITA to keep it all clean and minimize the dust.

Anyway, if you strip it, sandable primer is your best bet, use aas many coats as needed, sanding in between.  The best trick for sanding is to coat it with light dust of black cheapo paint and sand away till the black disappears, thats how you make it smooth. And spray primer again and black agian and sand it smooth and keep going at it till you are happy with it.  Sanding using a block of course, never just paper in hand.

Before spraying paint - Exact match is close enough imho and better than mixing it yourself - wipe it down with Xylol or similar nasty #$%* at least twice.  After that we used antistatic wipe, they can be had from a body supply shop.

The trick is to spray paint like you are almost running out and need to cover the most with it, once you get run offs you are up the #$%* creek.

Also you gotta paint it indoors with minimum air movement to minimize dust and bugs getting caught in the paint.  Some people make improvised paint booth in a corner of the garage using plastic sheething, plenty of ideas come in google search.

Good luck, I hope she is pretty  ;D

Mixing your own has some learning curve to it; myself I would not attempt to do it for one job.

Plus you need a good spray gun and a decent compressor.

So the sanding technique is called guide coat and this guys shows how:

What 70CB said. Don't strip it to bare metal, that creates A LOT more work and may create more issues after painting. Scuff it really well, then prime, then block it, then paint it and clear. Is the paint damaged or just the clear?

The paint is cracking off and therer are two large ovals where it looks as if its at bare metal but no rust. Very weird. The ridge between paint and bare metal seems to be a bout slightly less than a mm thick. Which is why I wanted to remove all of it. But you're saying best to sand it down then paint? That would save me some money as I'd only need to buy 1 can of basecoat.

I just figured I'd get a more uniform look if all of it was removed.

Spraymax 2k is great stuff, but consider this.

By the time you buy paint and primer (and hope you have enough to do the job) and stripper and sandpaper and guide coat and respirator filters (because you're using a respirator with that catalyzed paint, RIGHT!?!?!) and plastic to set up a spray booth.... well you're a good chunk of the way to that $350 price point already, and that's before you count the value of your time.

I'm guessing this would be a one-day job for a decent paint shop, and if it's not right they're on the hook to fix it.

Could be done on your own for sure, but unless you're doing it for the enjoyment or because you're trying to do something unique, it may be better to just send it in.

I was wondering why it wasn't rusted. Would that coat still need a primer/sealer or just a primer or could you spray straight base coat on it? It's color is kindof light and the basecoat is a little bit darker.

My '68 Nova did the same thing on the trunk lid and hood.  Never did rust but was bare metal.  Always puzzled me, especially considering it was only too willing to rust elsewhere.

Buy a dual action sander. Goes a lot quicker than blocking it several times. Run over it with the DA, prime it, hit it with guide coat, block it. That'll show you the low spots. Fill as necessary, repeat.

BTW, the stated yield on Spraymax cans (at least on the clear) is:

Quote
Yield:

Approx. 0.5m² - 1m² / spray can depending on the application thickness and substrate

why not a 'satin finish'? and you'd never see the low spots  ::) :D
I think the body shops have it 'Down' right and it would be a burden off of you to bring it to them as noted earlier..
You may yet find an independent operator who can please your price point.
