Your a brave man Frank, posting that on this forum. ;)...but come to think of it, I have two sets right now that are probably only fit for the dump.

If you are talking to me...they are rusted beyond saving.  Back in the day, guys just didn't like them, thought they were low performing, too quiet, too heavy, plus they rusted beyond saving quite rapidly. ;)

I remember one of the first thing guys did back in the day was to hack saw the mufflers off. I never understood other
than for the sound effect. Maybe the assumption that the engine could breath better? I ran mine till they rusted.
Missed out on a used set a guy was selling for 75.00 He was building a chopper and didn't need them.
They had barely a thousand miles on em. Sold my bike shortly after. Hard to believe what they go for now.

The replica 4-4 are not that expensive nowadays. But new replicas of HM300 cost more than HM341 replicas..... HM341 must be more complicated to make when they have more parts in them, right? Restrictive discs..

Old 4-4 ugly enough to be replaced. My new 4-4 installation costed some when I had dumped the center stand, exhaust spigots and good passenger footpegs together with the old, dented and scratched HM341 back in 1982 something...

Nothing.. back in the 70's cruisers and psuedo choppers were all the rage so many customers had our shop convert to either 4 into 2 or 4 into 1.  We then put the take-offs into the dumpster.  No idea how many 4 into 4s our shop was responsible for :-\ :-X :P.   Dozens most likely as we were one of the larger dealerships on the east coast

Forty lashes with a wet noodle for anyone that took these pipes to the dumpster ;D You mean you didn't know that 40 plus years in the future that these original pipes would be a hot commodity and people like us would pay dearly for them. Haha! Don't ask me how I know ;)

OK I know it's not a Honda SOHC but...it's a similar story. My old man had a 1936  Velocette MAC sitting in the back of the shed. I remember sitting on it when I was a kid in the '60's. Then he decided it was worth nothing & took it to the dump!! :'( I frequently remind him these are worth at least $15K now in Australia!

I, too, am guilty.  I was working at a Honda dealership in the late 70's and early 80's.  I can't count how many brand new sets of exhaust were tossed in favor of a Hooker header or other aftermarket pipes.  My brand new '76 CB750K got a new Hooker installed right out of the crate..and the brand new factory exhaust..cast aside.  I can remember lines of perfectly good stock exhaust hanging from the rafters before being thrown away.

About 20 years ago I went to a salvage yard -- my 350F had rusted out 4-2 pipes, and I wanted to see what I could get. I found a set of OEM 4-4 for 350F and a 400F set, both complete, no road rash or dings, and great chrome. The guy wanted $125 for each. I opted for the 400F ones. Should have bought both. I went back a couple years later, the 4-4 pipes were still there, but he wanted $400 for them. I thought that was crazy. Still shoulda bought them. Not exactly a throwing-them-out regret, but man, if I only had a couple hundred extra bucks back then.

A local retired Honda dealer lives near my place. He has seen my 750's and mentioned back in the day not only did they toss new exhaust, but same thing with OEM seats....by the truck load. I am going to have nightmares now.

My local shop took 2 pickup loads to scrap, they built a rack and when the mufflers covered two walls the decision was made to scrap them.

OK, this will make you jealous, so don't say I didn't warn you. Around 1990 my original 4 in 4 had served around 75.000 kms and needed to be renewed. Not so much the outside, but the inside was loose. I remembered a Honda dealer had two genuine CB500 exhausts lying around that he wanted to get rid of because he needed the room. He let me have them for € 50,- each. I couldn't believe my eyes, they were indeed NEW. I made some phonecalls and found #3 in Haarlem, not even 20 kms from here. That dealer would not sell that one for less than  € 75,-. So for € 175 I had three exhausts NEW (unused!). I decided I had had enough luck, went back to the first dealer and ordered #4 new for the Honda price and bargained a 20% rebate. Now the reason those dealers had those exhausts lying around was because in the 70s, for some silly reason, some bikers bought a new CB500 and wanted a 4-1 on it from the start. They had heard all kinds of nonsense. I just came in the right time at the right place. Those dealers were tired of those exhausts hanging around and didn't expect them to sell them anymore. Had I waited another three weeks, I could have had also #4 for € 75,- as well, again NEW. It was advertised but was a 100 km from here.
Now as if my luck was not complete yet: some months later the technician that came to inspect my central heating system turned out to be an CB500 owner too. He told me he desired his bike to look original and was in search of the genuine 4-4, but could not afford new ones. I showed him my old set that still hang in the garage and said he could have the four for € 100,-. Mind you the headers were stiil as new. Glad like a child he was. All in all, I must be the person that had a new set of 4-4 for the lowest price in the world.
So now my second set has done 60.000 kms and are still as new. Here's the secret. Inspect every now and then the little drainholes at the bottom are still open because that's where they will start to corrode. Apart from holidayrides I always park the bike in the garage and most important: I never make rides shorter than 25 minutes and part of it has to be on the open road. Ride your bike hot (they love it and especially the 500/550 has lots of reserve in temperature). A benificial sideaffect is that you'll not experience drainage of the battery which seems to be an issue in this here forum.

In an act of great generousity, I sold an entire set of 341s to a forum member here for 125.00 usd. It was when I wanted new ones while restoring my 750. I figured at the time that I'd never need them again. AFAIK, they went on a K6. The guy
who bought them never got the bike running correctly, and disappeared. Regretting that one sometimes. :(

I can't tell you how many whole bikes were curbside on bulk pickup day when I was a kid. Probably the early 90s. I tend to keep all my stock stuff in a crate but if it was really bad condition then you really don't know any better.

The exhaust was the worst part made on the 750.  They were replaced not only for supposed performance mods, but they also rusted badly.   I don't believe Honda manufactured them and they certainly weren't engineered to last 40 years!
They wanted us to upgrade to a new bike every few years.

I just bought a set for my K1, $300.  Overall pretty good condition, no rust holes, even on the prone #2.
