Red light/reflector on steering stem nut?
« on: January 29, 2016, 12:32:24 AM »
Hi,
I have a recently imported from Japan CB750F0 '75.
It has a Red light/reflector on steering stem nut?
Can anyone tell me what this is for? Is it Honda genuine?

I tried to attach a pic but forum didn't like to upload from iPad.

Thanks
DB

The experts will chime in soon enough, but I am pretty sure it was a speed notification that would light if you went too fast. I don't remember at what speed it came on but it was a Honda design for the Japanese market.

I think it is a non functional add on. if it is indeed a speed warning which i believe were on the gauges. There needs to be a wire leading to it. I zoomed in and saw no wire. It is highly doubtful they drilled a hole in a nut.

One way to tell if it is/was some kind of indicator there will be wires. Try looking into the bottom of the tube that comes up through your neck. With a bright enough light you should be able to see all the way up the tube.

Japanese 75 CB750F?? That's a new one on me. Thought they exported all F's?? That indicator may have been sourced off a K??

Can you post up more pictures of the bike please? I know there are minor differences in the Euro model F's such as no 75 or 78. What about a serial number to research it?

I have one manual that states it is a speedwarning lamp but I don't quite understand the purpose of the reflector. I do remember in some countries in SE Asia you had devices to prevent people from speeding. In Malaysia, if I remember well, all commercial vehicles had an orange lamp on top. If they we're going about the maximum speed the lamp would start to blink and if they were going too fast for too long the lamp would light up constantly drawing the attention of the cops alongside the road.
Although I've never witnessed it myself, I've heard of another country (could be Japan that I've never travelled) where horns would sound automatically and that they could only be switched of by a officer (with a special key) who ofcourse would write out a ticket at the occasion.

I have exactly the same on my 550F here in New Zealand although i think the bike was originally imported from Japan.

There are wires going up to it from the bottom of the stem/tube. My wiring is a bit of a mess and I havent had a chance to sort it all out yet, it was connected to some other buzzer looking thing which I couldn't account for on any wiring diagram either. both were disconnected from the main harness however. I put power to it and it lit up, theres a small bulb in it. I plan to just get rid of it when i sort the rest of the wiring out.

It would be nice if we had members from/in Japan.

There is a wire going up into the tube. The wiring diagrams I have are AUS USA EU and do no show this lamp.
The numbers match a 1975 CB750F0.
Without rego I haven't had it up to a decent speed to check it out.
Speed warning makes good sense as that is a typical Japanese quirk.

The bike appears to have a '77 tank presto red in colour. The fairing looks as though it was flake sunrise sprayed poorly over with presto red.

Indeed a speed warning lamp. I had one on a CB350F that had a Canadian provenance (but may have first been registered in Japan). If I remember correctly, the light came on at either 80kph or 100kph -- can't remember. The speedo was metric, but I think it had mph in smaller writing. This was 20+ years ago so I'm not certain about all the details.

I stand corrected. It is  funky looking.

Why is everyone afraid to post serial numbers?!

OK, I'll start:

CB750F-1001606
CB750E-1001954

Bought mine new 4/75 so I KNOW what I have and how they are supposed to be. Willing to help.

I'm not scared  8)

Registered here as a 1977 CB750K
Engine #: CB750E-2700001
Frame #: CB750-2700009-2800001

I got it 5 years ago.
I am a bit slow but I did not realise it was a JDM until I got the Mick Duckworth book on the CB750 and the answer was there buried on page 78
“the rear disc-equipped K7 for the Japanese market. This odd model also had the alloy footrest hanger plates as seen on its F2 Super Sports Model”

Engine no: CB750E-2732591
Chassis: CB750F-1100892

On a closed road under controlled conditions I have seen more that the recommended 80km/hr  ;)

Looks nice  :) F0/F1?? The number indicates to me it's a 76 model built perhaps 5/75 but the 76's were CB750F-2xxxxxx?? 77/78 tank. US turn signals, not European?

Whats the build date?
