Finished CB350F Cafe
« on: January 30, 2016, 01:30:37 PM »
Hey guys.

Here's the finished product and some pics from along the way. Been about 18 months of chipping away at it. Still going to do something about that front mudguard eventually.

I've restored a CB100 and a Kawasaki A7 but this was my first non factory style restoration. I was amazed at the flow on effect of making small changes all the time. And how much anguish there was over trying to get things to have good lines.

I did pretty much all the work myself except for truing the wheels and re boring the cylinders. It was my first proper attempt at painting. Made so many mistakes with the painting but it turned out good. It took me seven hours to do the tank cause i made so many little cock ups along the way. If I did it again now I think I'd get it done in two or three!

The list of new parts: Wheels, spokes, pistons, rings, seat, headlight, all cables, chain, sprockets, coils, spark leads, all carb jets/needles, battery, rear shocks.

I like the color paint design on the tank. Very cool.  I also like the rear fender idea,

Thanks. Yeah it is. Just cut, ground then filed the posts off. It leaves two small holes per post which are easily filled up and painted over

And a HUGE thankyou to all the people who contribute to this forum. It honestly would have been almost impossible without digging through all the threads to solve so many issues.

When I bought the bike it didn't run and I optimistically thought it would be fairly minor to get going... Was I wrong. Stripped spark plug threads were the first issue. Then I had the motor wet soda blasted which seized one cylinder (whoops). Head off only to find three bent valves. Previous owner didn't even have the cam chain tensioner lock bolt on the bike. Spark advancer fully seized. Coil leads were buggered. Carbs were filthy - Soda blasting sorted that. Both forks bent. If it could wear out... It pretty much was as a rule of thumb.

Does the back tire rub when the suspension cycles? Looks to have 4 inches of uptravel and 2 inches of clearance.

Hasn't yet. I've tried my best to get them to touch and haven't been able to. Those shocks are almost 2" longer than the ones (factory I think) that it had when I got it.

Hmm. :-X

Do you find that having 2 inch longer shocks which increases the swingarm angle makes it so that you have to have a lot of slack in the chain?....

Lovely little bike! ;D If I may add some constructive criticism, it looks as your shift linkage could use some adjustment, as the angles are a bit off. The levers on both the foot shifter and the trans should be near 90 degrees to the rod. You might try moving the linkage to a "down under" configuration. ;)
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

What was the thinking behind wrapping the pipes?

Nicely done!  Details on those pistons?  They look higher comp than stock.  Are they still 47mm bore?

I wrapped the pipes because they looked a disaster and aftermarket header options are basically nil here in NZ. Still had to rebuild the collector cause number three pipe was crushed to the point it has almost no flow

The pistons are just cheapies off Ebay. A couple guys off here have used them so I figured why not try - for 87 dollars with not a whole lot of alternatives. Mine are 2nd oversize. I'm not sure what the rules are on this forum about posting Ebay links but the seller is called crusinimage. Time will tell! It's running really nice for now though.
