The original Yoshimura pipes had no mounting tab.  Never seen Motogpwerks pipe in real life, but I would imagine they are as lite or lighter.  I ran a similar weight and length exhaust for a few years, 10's of thousands of miles, had it on and off numerous times, never even messed with studs, just used socket head cap screws and it was absolutely no problem.  If you think about it, 8 times 10mm bolts engaged at least to a depth of at least 25mm?...you would have to be quite the ham fisted mutton head for anything to go wrong.

If that where true you could use the exhaust as a jack point but it's not.
Those are 6mm studs and I would feel more confident with the rear hanger than without.
you are right, my bad...but my point is still the same,  and I always meant to make a rear hanger in the beginning, 2000 miles later and everything is fine, why bother

...oh and I have used the exhaust as a jack point too, really scary, but also did not hurt anything

and it turns out we are both wrong...8mm

guessing, and vaguely remember, the 550's have 6mm?...that would be sketchy

Both intake and exhaust studs on the 5x0 are 6mm.

Yes the 550's are in fact 6mm.
My knowledge is limited to the we little bikes.
Sorry for misleading.

M6 studs on 550… 8 of em.  all together not super strong but it's a very light thin wall one piece pipe.

Carpy says the pipe is "Fine" without a hanger or clamp in the back.
Maybe.

I ran it that way for 500 miles.  Started to feel more vibration one day.  The pipe had gotten slightly loose but was not allowing air leak… just enough from the tail wagging the dog that it battered the copper covered exhaust flange gaskets flat.

I pulled it, replaced the gaskets, fitted a tail collar (exhaust P-Clamp) and hung that via a steel strap from the rear peg. 3k more miles (till a crash) and it was perfect.

Maybe it was me riding it "hard…" Maybe it was our crappy Los Angeles infrastructure with super/bumpy hard edged potholed etc.  Maybe it needed a clamp in the first place.  You be the judge.
I recently restored and sold a 77 cb750f, and am nearly finished with a (former basket case) cb750k5.  This is a place to share, learn and enjoy.  I am grateful to and for 99+% of this site's membership.

Considering that steel studs secure the exhaust into aluminum, I would ALWAYS run a rear mount.... ;)

You CAN NOT mount the pipe to the swingarm mate, the swingarm goes up and down about 2 inches either way, you'll end up ripping the studs out of the head or just wrecking the pipe, the pipe needs to be mounted to something solid that doesn't move like the frame or footpeg mount.....
