Rickman CR Refresh - Collection of Kit Parts

Alright, so I'm a sucker for punishment and when opportunity knocks, you answer! Many of you may remember the Rickman restomod that is being done by member hagar24. He was extremely helpful in making it possible for me to obtain the entirety of parts that he was not going to use in his build. I was able to gather all the parts you see here, as well as the front mudguard and the original chain guard.

There is very little information on the specifics of the kit or about reconditioning these parts that I could find. I will use this as a place to document progress on the restoration of these parts but also add details that one could not find without handling these parts.

It seems this is the earlier of kits in that it has the aluminum hubs with Borrani rims, whereas later kits had Ronal 5-spoke mag wheels.

Here is the rear wheel. Both sides of the hub have similar dimensions and the bolt pattern is the same, although the sprocket side is offset further from centerline. Both sides fasteners came apart really easily with some judicious PB Blaster use.

Front wheel has the same bolt pattern for the rotor as the rear rotor and sprocket. The front cast iron rotor is clearly larger than the rear but of the same design. I have gathered that these parts were very likely made for Rickman by Girling. This is the single disc hub version.

Aside from some surface rust, the rotors are both in very good shape. I am hoping I can get them resurfaced enough to get rid of any pitting on the pad surface. The sprocket is in very good condition and looks like it was used very little. It will still be replaced but at least I have something to take dimensions from.

An original set of Tommaselli clipons, in 38mm. While not part of the kit, they will look the part on this build and are a rare vintage part in their own right.

Original CP 2292 rear master cylinder. Its missing the cap but they are still available. The rebuild kits are still out there as well.

The rear caliper stay. I have seen a few permutations of this part, some with holes (likely not factory). Most are this variety, but I have seen some with shorter torque arms that are under the rotor instead of on top.

Front and rear calipers. These are the original CP 2195 units. You can see both are the same 'hand' version. If this were a dual disc version, the second front caliper would have the brake line input on the opposite end of the outer side. I am having some issues getting the second piston out of each caliper. I was able to get one loose with compressed air but the other is very stuck. I will have to adapt a fitting for a grease gun and see if that works. In the meantime, I will keep soaking the piston area with PB Blaster to try and loosen it up.

38mm Betor forks. This is the single disc version. From research I have done, the 38mm street version may have been the single disc one while any Rickman with dual disc was the 41.5mm fork. If anyone can shed light on this it would be really helpful. These will need complete rebuilding top to bottom. I will also eventually be sending the lowers to Jim F to be laser welded as there are some pretty big dings in them. These are also substantially (about 3") shorter than other forks of the era so I may end up sourcing some longer tubes, but that all depends on what frame I use and the desired geometry.

The top and bottom triple trees are the worst of any of the parts for condition. They appear extremely corroded, to the point that they have blistered and pieces are falling off. I think these are beyond saving but opinions are welcome.

That's all for now and as I get parts sourced to rebuild these components I will post here. I will also be leaning on the brothers here for a multitude of services to get everything as new where possible.

Hey Stev-o, thanks for following along. These won't be restored to concourse level as far as replicating the original finishes, but things will be restored to better than new. For instance, the fork legs will be laser welded (very little heat) and then a medium polish with maybe powder coat over top. The wheels will be un-dented (if possible, is that a thing?) and reconditioned with new SS spokes and either polished/powdered/vapor blasted hubs. Stuff like that. Since I don't have every single part and many pieces need a lot of help, I don't think it does a disservice to improve on the finishes.

I will definitely look into that scottly, thank you!. I would hate to have to replace the wheels if these are salvageable. I can get then restamped with the same lettering straight from Borrani, but would much rather save the originals.

I have been doing some investigating on the interwebs for parts and pieces to recondition the parts I have. The first issue is trying to find someone to recondition the rotors. The rear has quite a bit of pitting so I reached out to Godffery about getting them done, but since they are one piece he wasn't able to do them with his process. He directed me to a guy on ebay that does rotor drilling and resurfacing, so I am waiting to hear from him. Anyone else have ideas? These are the original rotors and are extremely difficult to find so I would prefer not to have some schmo at a brake shop try to turn them since thats not really the best way.

I am also exploring places for brake lines like the originals. I have not come up with anything and at this point might be out of luck. Here is what the original fittings look like.

That's an interesting rear rotor.  Goddfrey disassembles the rotor from the carrier so he can resurface the rotor at a uniform height (not having to deal with the inner carrier, and then re-attaches the carrier.  Who did you find on the interwebs to do it?

Cut out a ring from 1 1/4 or so aluminum..  Rough machine it to get small lip , put your bolt pattern in to hold rotor. Then mount in lathe finish machining, do not remove. Then mount discs and machine.. Dont pull fixture till done..

That would work. Could it also be done on a mill with rotary table?  Mount it to the table and go around the outside with a single cut device like a fly cutter. That would allow you to go around the outside of both sides without touching anything else. Have to make sure everything was very true but should work or am I missing something?

I think I would try to chemically remove the rust from rotors first, then evaluate the condition. Rusted iron "swells" due to the addition of oxygen atoms. Slight pitting will not affect the operation, and may actually improve braking, as long as it is even all the way around.
As Frank says, cast iron machines very well, but would require a custom arbor to hold it straight and true on a lathe, with reference to the mounting surface at the hub. I have an attachment that would allow cutting both sides of a rotor at the same time, but I've never used it, and I'm not going to use your rare rotors as guinea pigs. ;)

What's best to get the rust of? I was going to pick up some evaporust from the local auto parts store and give them a good soak. My brother is a gunsmith and has a bigger lathe than mine so I will try to use his with an adapter plate to hold the rotor while I skim the surface.

I'm still struggling with getting the second piston from each caliper. The pistons are in bad shape anyway so I thought about threading a couple small bolts into the face of the piston and rigging up a slide hammer to pull them out. I have been on the pb blaster pretty diligently with no luck.

Immerse them in a chemical solution, then you may be able to apply some heat on the piston and get it to release as it expands. Propane may not get hot enough, but MAPP would work.

Immerse them in a chemical solution, then you may be able to apply some heat on the piston and get it to release as it expands. Propane may not get hot enough, but MAPP would work.

Evaporust or similar. Something amenable to aluminum being immersed, but effective on steel. For that matter, a gallon of WD and heat should do the trick. Any way you can use a grease gun to pump out the piston thru the hydraulic fitting?

I will give that a shot. The issue with the grease gun approach is that its an opposed piston caliper. One piston comes out really easily and the other is stuck. I suppose I could reassemble the caliper and put the good piston back in, clamping it down so it doesn't move while the grease acts on the stuck piston. With the caliper apart, I have the brake line hole and the small crossover hole open so it would be difficult to seal it up so it will need to go back together. I will see about getting a gallon of evaporust and a 3/8-24 grease fitting from the auto store today and give it a whirl.
