removing forks on 76 750 pretty straight forward?
« on: January 30, 2016, 06:40:56 pm »
I'm preparing to remove the forks and rebuild them. I have never done this, but I have done most everything else on a bike in the past. Is it as simple as it seems? Thanks for any input.

Hardest thing is to support the bike when removing forks.  I like to loosen the fork caps first while still in triple tree.  Keep fork caps in until the allen bolt holding the damper is removed.  Consider draining fork oil before removing the allen bolt.  The manual has good info on this.

Crack the Allen's loose with the weight of the bike on it before you do anything else. have a catch can handy.

That will be a bit hard to do, as the axle has to be removed to get to those Allen bolts.......

Best, safest way is to lift the entire front end off the ground.

I have a pice of angle metal bolted to the ceiling joists and attach a 4" wide strap to hoist the front end of the bike.

I use front a front wheel stand that goes into the triple tree.  Need to also use a rear stand or some can use the center stand  with the front wheel stand.   I needed that stuff for my sport bikes, so some people would not have those stands.  The other guys have very good ideas and if I did not have my stuff that is what I would do.

Thanks for the help! Also very good info on Youtube. I dismantled everything, installing new neck bearings, undecided if I will install new or another used set of fork tubes, they aren't bad, but a bit rough on the part that will be visible now that the headlight "ear" assembly is not going to be used. I guess we'll see how it all works out..

Just remember, when bolting everything on the triple tree back up, make sure the front wheel is pointing straight and the fork tubes are even.

If you're a drummer, a cymbal stand without the top works perfectly. I caught the edge right behind the lower triple tree on the frame and raised the height of the stand until I could slide the forks out. Once you are done rebuilding, reinstall the forks, then get the wheel into position and slowly loosen the stand to drop the forks onto the axle.
