Ultra-strong lightweight aluminum-steel alloy?
« on: February 08, 2016, 10:39:35 AM »
Promising new Technology makes Ultra-strong lightweight aluminum-steel alloy a reality. A new steel is as strong as titanium, 10 times cheaper!

Very interesting if you're into frame building.

With the advents in metallurgy through the decades, steel remains the preferred material. Lots f cast alloy frames in race bikes, but more CroMo it seems. If you look at cycling, Ti has had its binge, of course steel, and CroMo. Even Carbon Fiber has been popular at times. But repair, modification and general endurance of steel still prevails.

I like exotic materials. I love working with aluminum and am tinkering with some Ti. I marveled at Oakley's X Metal when they introduced it a year or two ago. "Purpose Beyond Reason"! You gotta love those who create despite market dynamics.  :D

I'd like to see carbon wrapped tubing over an alloy core. Light, strong, and stiff. And possibly repairable. Just need a whole line of DIY-sized autoclaves to accompany those 3D Printers  8)

I couldn't , but I am sure  the maker of the weld less frame kit could.  Whole new market for you if the stuff is machineable.

Triple trees, brackets spacers..maybe..
Wonder if it has formability? Though a tank glued together would look funny.

It appears it would be a good candidate for replacement festivus poles due to the great strength-to-weight ratio.  :)

That is funny!  The extra strength would be useful for all the intense celebration of cramming all the holidays into one day.  Maybe Walmart should offer these since they already bunch all the Holidays together Festivas style
