RPM surge
« on: August 22, 2016, 07:47:38 AM »
Hey there,

Recently my bikes rpm has been surging while driving. It revs up while speed remains the same and then drops back down. I have cleaned carbs and put them back on only to still have this happen. I have checked over carb boots and there is no cracks. Boots are only a couple months old on bike. Tightened boot clamps but still same issue. I am wondering where else I should look. Timing?

I was also wondering - does anybody sell whole rebuild kits, or does one have to buy "6 of everything" piece by piece?

By adjustment you mean clutch cable? I'll have to check it next time I'm at the garage. How much slack should there be?

You'll need to remove the cover.
Slacken off completely the adjustment at both ends of the cable, so the cable is not under any tension.
Loosen the locknut under the clutch cover. Turn the adjusting screw out a turn or two(so it is free), then turn back in clockwise until you can just feel the pressure of it getting tighter. Back it off 1/4 turn, and holding it in position tighten the locknut.
From the clutch cover end, take up the adjustment on the cable until you have about 3/8" to 1/2" freeplay at the lever - meaning you can pull the lever in by that amount before any resistance is felt.
Job done. Use the adjuster at the lever for fine tuning if needed.

Worth checking before you shell out for a new clutch.

I've got zero free play and a new clutch cable ready to install.
Guess I know what will be tomorrow's project...

Zero free play is bad juju, clutch lever needs some wiggle, and the notches on the clutch case and armature need to be aligned.

My new motionpro clutch cable broke and stranded me w/ less than 500 miles on it.
My original clutch cable from 1978 went back on and is still doing its job  ::)
