750 A rim finish Q?
« on: February 03, 2016, 08:37:18 pm »
I bought a 17" 750A? aluminum rear wheel assembly for my drag bike project, it's got a fresh Shinko on it.
Anyway the aluminum rim shines real well in spots but there's a coating on it that needs to come off. What's the best way to remove the clear coat without taking it apart? Stripper, Scotchbrite, oven cleaner?

The 16X5" M&H is gorgeous but might be too old to use now, it looks awesome but would be a bear to turn a corner with. I'll leave it mounted up for shows or a little cackle action .

I suspect clear anodize.. Might come off with oven cleaner but not real sure of that..

I'm sure a little stripper would take off any clear coat that is on there with ease. I've used it when polishing aluminum engine parts to take off the factory clear coat.

If it is the same stuff that was on my 81 650 Custom Comstar wheels stripper won't touch it. I used a Scotchbright pad and a lot of elbow grease. Polished up nicely though.

I had some luck on a painted cb400F engine case with Scotchbrite and carb cleaner. When it dried the goo stuck again so I added WD40 to the mix. I'll try that and report back.

Oven cleaner will remove the anodizing.   Then you will be free to polish the rim.
