Hello to all from chicago land....
« on: February 03, 2016, 04:09:28 AM »
Good morning to all! Wow, took me 2 days to gain approval to join the forum, lol.

First off my name is Bronko and I live in NW Indiana near chicago. I am 35 years old and have been on 2 wheels since I could. I am a machinist by trade but now I teach a precision machining class at the high school I graduated from, its pretty sweet.

Currently I own a 1976 Honda GL1000, a 1984 Honda GL1200A, and I just purchased a 1973 Honda CB750K3 as a project bike.

I began my journey of wrenching 2 years ago when I purchased my GL1000 off of ebay for $700 as a non runner and had it shipped from Pennsylvania. Over the last 2 years I have really enjoyed working on that bike and am currently buttoning up the engine from doing the piston rings on it. You can see the progress here: https://www.youtube.com/user/btrapp37

I am planning on tearing into this 750 as soon as I can and am also looking forward to getting to know the guys on the forum.

I should also mention that the bike came with a Hannigan farining with lowers. While the fairing and lowers are super cool, its just not my thing on this particular bike. If anyone is interested in possibly purchasing them shoot me a PM and maybe we can work out a deal. As soon as I can post pics I will start a thread about the bike. I will also be posting build videos on my Youtube channel. A picture is after all worth a thousand words.

Thanks for having me!

Here is my GL1000 "cafe' cruiser" although she is very fast......

Welcome.

2 really necessary tools for these bikes: a proper set of JIS screwdrivers and Hondaman's book:

It takes about 5 posts to enable posting photos. Or you can use a PhotoBucket account more easily.

JIS screw drivers, already got em from workin on the GLs. Hondamans book, will definitely order that up as well as a new shop manual for this model line.

I owned a 77 cb750fss about 15 years ago so its not all brand new to me, but I still have SOOOOO much to learn. I am really excited to tear into this bike tho.

You betchya. Im trying to get my 5 posts in for sure so I can post a picture of this hannigan fairing and lowers. I'm hoping that someone here may be interested in it, but thats not the only reason Im here. I will be starting a thread for the build soon enough. I scoured the web and this seems like the best forum out there for this style of bike. Ive been an active and donating member of ClassicGoldWings.com for over 2 years now. If you need to learn about goldwings that is the place to go, but certainly not the place for this particular build.

I want to build a bike a year. This cafe build is for the sole purpose of learning, having fun wrenchin, and the joy of making someones day when they get to ride it home. Take the money and do it all again.

This is for sure the best forum I've experienced. Loads of information and helpful people. What school do you teach at?

Thanks for the warm welcome guys!

I teach at Crown Point High School. I am in my 9th year here. I have 12 south bend lathes, 6 bridgeport mills, 2 surface grinders, a horizontal mill, 2 shapers (yes, shapers), 2 gear head drill presses, and a slough of bench/pedestal grinders. Trust me, when doing any custom bike work it is awesome having a facility like this. There is no way I could do things like this:

without this lab.

Hey Ed, where abouts you from in NW Indiana? We may be closer than you think.

Wow, both of those bikes are stunning. I can see that no expense was spared. Well done to both of the participants in that BOTM contest.

I'm up in Whiting, and my fave local route is to Lowell via Cedar Lake. Ridden that one many times, even took our mascot Pimpzilla on his annual ride on the same route ;) Very impressed by the machining stuff you have access to! If I could find the time, I'd take that class.

Good to know you Ed. I am sure we will hook up at some point and cruise around. They do a small car/bike show in Lowell on the first Saturday of each month, beginning in May I believe, maybe June? Anyway, it would be awesome to show that bike of yours off.

10-32 screws holding a Japanese carburetor!!!! Blasphemy! Mixing SAE and METRIC what are you thinking? I move to expel this guy from the Forum for contaminating these beloved little machines with SAE screws... Excuse me while I go throw up  :o :o :o :o  ;D

Glad to be here. I try and stay active on the forums, especially when Im working on the bikes. I teach that class so I check in all thru the day. Also, I love the use of your 3'. Most people wouldn't get that i think. Only took me 3" to catch on to it.  ;)

Im getting ready to start my first thread on my project. It probably wont have too much activity tho until I finish working on my 76 gl1000. Im joining the motor halves this weekend after after completing the ring job on it.

Did I understand correctly, that "lab" is at a High School? Thats pretty darn great that the county has invested to that extent in the machines and educators to attract, teach, train and release a generation of young machinists on the world! I have a Junior who is dabbling away with welding, machining and the like as he orients himself towards college for Mech Eng. The extent of our schools offer 3-D printing which is a far cry from Bridgeports, Clausings and Haas'.  :'( Fortunately, he has access to those outside of school to feed his appetite.

Yea it's one of the few survivors. I'm just trying to keep it going. Fortunately there is a lot of industry in my area that I can feed my graduates into.

Also, I posted my stuff in the "bikes" forum and I think it should have gone into the "projects" forum. Is there a moderator who can move the thread for me?
