500 four and 550 frames
« on: February 03, 2016, 05:14:18 pm »
I have run into some issues with my project...for complicated insurance reasons I don't think I'll be able to use my 550 frame. I do however have access to a 500 four frame. I know the 77/78 550s have some changes in frame. My plan was already to take my bike down to the frame and this includes a USD fork swap and different seat etc. What sort of complications will I run into (if any) by swapping the 550 engine into the 500 frame (if any)? Another deciding factor is in my jurisdiction there are significant insurance premium differences for 500 & under bikes...

I have searched and couldn't find any specific answers.  Thanks in advance

Slapping a 550 into a 500 frame is a nice upgrade

You'll need one engine bracket on the right hand side to hold the 550 clutch cable. Other than that, it'll bolt right up.
If you have '77-78 carbs, you'll need the correct airbox boots, too.

Not only does it have larger displacement, but the clutch system was upgraded when the '74 model 550 came out.

I doubt the frame's original motor size will determine your insurance, as usually its the "motor" size, unless I interpreted your statement incorrectly?
