CB550F fuel flap
« on: February 03, 2016, 08:05:45 pm »
I got a call from my painter today, my 75 ss tank is repaired, lined and primed w/2pac and he will have a flake sunrise orange test panel ready for me to inspect ready soon. The question he asked that I couldn't answer though is:

Was the fuel flap originally painted full gloss black? or semi gloss or satin black??
Thanks in advance for your guidance :)
John

Hi Jon.....my '76 550F has original paint and the fuel door appears to be a satin black.

That Sunrise Orange is going to look sweet!  Have you considered panting the door that color too?

+3 for semigloss. Seems like a different kind of paint than the coloured portion of the tank as well.

hmm yes, I think satin or semi gloss seems right - I am glad the painter rang me to check because I told him full gloss originally which doesn't seem right to him.
I did consider painting the flap orange but decided in keeping with my original vision of trying as much as possible to achieve "that original look" to go with black. Still something I am thinking about though as I could paint the flap of my spare tank and have one of each...
 thanks! John

I don't think you could go wrong either way. Coloured or black. Only the real "die-hards" would notice such a detail.

Another question- the painter (Paul) has asked me twice:

are original new "honda" badges available for these tanks?
-(the left and right badges have different pin spacing on these!)

I see lots of aftermarket stick on ones available but I am not interested in them, I really want metal badges with mounting pins.

 - I have one set of original badges with rather too much patina on the chrome which I've asked Paul to repaint the black around the chrome on them for me, but he seems keen for me to try and get new ones.

that will be difficult to find. probably easier to look for old ones in better shape then the ones you have, then recondition them if necessary.

Have you tried BadgeReplica in AU?  They sell for CB500, but don't list 550.

Sure, let us know what he says.  I bought my Kawasaki badges from them, the quality is top notch.

Going to be getting my 76 550F tank repaired and painted as well. May I ask how much you're dishing out for yours? I was quoted $400 by a local shop to pull dent and paint tank + side covers.

I find the supersport parts pretty hard to come by sometimes. Compared to the K model. I painted my gas flap satin black and it looked spot on.

I'd pay that in a minute if its a quality job.  My guy quoted me $600, and thats without a nasty dent like yours.
Are your side covers 40 years old? If yes, consider buying new ones if you plan to keep your bike for awhile.  I would have to spend money on nice paint and then have the sidecovers crack the first time you need to take em off.
A good set from Frankie is $78.

Yeah Stev-o, a higher end place quoted $800 but I think I'll do the cheaper option. The left side cover is original and solid. The right (battery) side however is cracked so I've bought a replacement for that one. I found a nice paint match (Dupli-color DE 1607) I'll post a before and after down the road.

If it's a proper professional quality 2pac paint job $400 sounds like a bargain!

My tank had several dents and a little rust hole in the bottom, but my sidecovers are brand new old stock OEM. So far with dents pulled, tank sandblasted, hole repaired, tank sealer professionally applied(-$400 just for that!) and 2pac undercoat done so now it's ready for colour, it has come to $1200. Estimated total including repainting the fuel flap and the black part of the tank badges is $1500.

If I had given him a tank that needed no repairs and picked a non metal flake colour it would have been around $300 for a tank and two sidecovers!

Shop offered a colour match but I had contacted this guy http://tinyurl.com/jmyjzas and he used the can for his tank.

I also found this website http://www.ct70paint.com/shiny-orange.html , however I haven't seen any painted examples.

The VMR paints have gotten good reviews here.  I may use it on my '74 550 - Sunrise Orange
