What type of steel comes standard in the CB750
« on: February 04, 2016, 08:50:06 am »
Trying to replace all the screws/bolts/nuts and compiling an order on boltdepot.com but not sure what's the difference between all the types of steel

https://www.boltdepot.com/Metric_socket_products.aspx?nv=l

They got:

Sockets:
Stainless steel 18-8
Class 12.9 steel black oil finish
Chrome plated steel
Zinc plated class 12.9 alloy steel

Nuts:
Stainless steel 18-8
Zinc plated steel
Zinc plated class 8.8 steel
Zinc plated class 10.9 steel
Chrome plated class 8.8 steel
JIS Zinc plated class 8.8 steel

What came standard in the early cb750s? and is there a different type that supersedes it or is better now?

Also should I be ordering JIS whenever available?

Stainless steel 18-8                       < Very commonly used on rebuilds throughout these bikes are available in 2 grades A2 and A4
Class 12.9 steel black oil finish      < only good inside engine will rust like a mofo on outside
Chrome plated steel                      < Will work aswell maybe cost more than stainless?
Zinc plated class 12.9 alloy steel   < Closest to original

Grade: higher the number the stronger also higher number = more expensive

JIS / DIN: there isnt really any difference between them one thing you will notice with M8 Hex heads is DIN is a 13mm socket and JIS is 12mm

Be aware some of the bolts on our bikes are not readily available because of strange thread pitch these bolts are:

-Shock bolts and nuts
-Lower triple tree pinch bolts
-Brake caliper mount bolts
-Sprocket nuts

Also check prices at McMasterCarr they may be cheaper and also have a million interesting things and one can almost always find many other useful things :)

Thanks! I've been on mcmasters but it seems like they only sell in bulk quantities. I've also tried allenfasteners.com

I haven't seen the A2 or A4 grades listed anywhere, is it safe to assume if it's not listed that they are all grade A2?

Not to open this can up, but the zinc plated ones wouldn't need anti-seize right? and the stainless ones should have zinc anti-seize due to corrosion with the steel in aluminum?

I typically just upgrade to stainless. There may be a specialty hardware supply store in your City, 6mm socket head screws go for about 10 cents....cheap!

HUH, there's an outfit in the UK who are even doing motor mount hardware kits in stainless.  Expensive, but tempting....

oh absolutely I was going to purchase this http://www.stainlesscycle.com/presta/en/honda/397-honda-cb750-sohc.html after a few recommendations from this site, but was just wondering why this only had ~58 pieces where someone else recommended a set from another user Jim that had 85?

the bolts I'm trying to order are the old misc corroded ones such as in the air box housing, fenders, battery case etc

Ah, gotcha.

You can actually source a surprising variety of stainless metric hardware at your local Ace Hardware, especially if it's one of their Industrial Supply centers.

Convenient, but not as cheap as you can get them elsewhere.

Check into replating. Save yourself a ton of dough and get the exact same fastener, it is pretty simple to do.

the smell of new stainless steel man, sweet sweet stainless steal...  ;D

nah I've checked out the DIY zinc plating threads and not sure I'm reading to stick live battery wires into water in my apt at the moment. Plus boltdepot and allenfasteners have them for cents on the dollar

There was a listing on a Facebook group that I'm on that had SS axles and the swingarm pivot rod. Pricey but well made. I passed because the rear axle and the swingarm pivot rod didn't come with matching crown nuts. Haven't seen them listed again after that first set sold...

Also with the whole kit/set talk, does anyone know why so many different sellers have different amounts of bolts/washers? All of them advertise they are for the same Engine Cover, Clutch Cover, Generator Cover, Points Cover, Starter Cover, Tranny Cover, Valve Cover, etc. but they all have different quantities

like stainless steel has 58

Z1 has 60

https://www.z1enterprises.com/product/NGSS-190

alloy has 113

https://alloyboltz.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=316_358_370&products_id=2152&osCsid=q0htt5rhr8kcki4sisn4nhpd27

Kenosha ebay 63

How can all of them replace the same parts not be different amounts?

I am betting that they are counting the washers that they include.  alloyboltz includes a lot more of them, and I see that Kenosha_kid includes a bolt for the kick start arm, which the others don't seem to.

With a quality die nut, using 303 Stainless, you can turn your own (engine mounts). I have made a few, but cut the threads in my lathe, then finished with a die nut using 304 and 316 because I was using ARP fasteners. Just a idea for those who wish to replace their longer motor mount bolts.

Fastenal is another site you can look into for bulk hardware.

I have been going all stainless, wherever possible.

yeah I've checked out fastenal, personally prefer the layout of boltdepot so far, simple and straight forward

mystic

that's what I'm thinking too, guess alloy is looking like the best route so far

is it wise to change the bolts as they instructed? basically taking one out at a time and replacing? I don't mind replacing all the covers, but when I get to the header is it better to wait until work needs to be done to the top end than possibly loosening it just to replace the bolts?

If the covers all use the same bolt length, jerk them out and stick all new ones in. Or, go 1-by-1 as you can only unscrew 1 at a time anyway. I'd use stainless everywhere and just a slight dab of AntiSieze for optimum results.

If you remove the exhaust header, you need to replace the copper crush gaskets. So try replacing one at a time there, but be prepared to replace the gaskets if you get a leak. And don't over tighten any of the new bolts. The stainless will pull the threads out of the aluminum cases without notice.  :o
