Free Craigslist Bike
« on: February 05, 2016, 10:48:39 PM »
So I was on Craigslist browsing for a CB like every night. Many of us have this disease. ;D However, on this particular occasion I saw an eye-catching ad, "Free Suzuki GS1100 posted 1 hour ago." Sent an e-mail and we get a call back. The man must have gotten at least 30 e-mails and by luck we were the first ones he contacted. Score! Loaded her the same day on the flatdeck and brought her home. The owner made the purchase in 82 and parked her in an underground Vancouver garage in 94.

The GS1100G was a brilliant bike, it was fast, handled well and with shaft drive and a big comfy seat, made a great long distance tourer. Look after it. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Dang! That's not usually what I see when I see "free bike"!

I was going to make a comment about "no such thing as a free bike....kinda like 'free kittens' " , but you seem to be above the curve on this one!

I was talking to a guy that drag raced gs1100's from the early eighties. He said they had roller bearing cranks which made them desirable for that application as well as bullet proof.

I was talking to a guy that drag raced gs1100's from the early eighties. He said they had roller bearing cranks which made them desirable for that application as well as bullet proof.

Suzuki "Borrowed" the Kawasaki Z1's engine design almost in it's entirety, to the point where some parts were interchangeable on early GS bikes, but Suzuki built a far more robust frame, and with the release of the first GS1000 in 1978, built the world's best handling multi cylinder motorcycle.

The engines were so under-stressed that a stock bottom end and gearbox could easily handle twice the factory horsepower. The "G" models were designed with high speed touring in mind, and were comfortable mile-eaters. Surprisingly, the first GS1000G (1979) was actually faster than the GS1000S "Wes Cooley Replica" sports bike. I've had 3 or 4 GS1000's, a GS750 and a GS1000G, and they were all fantastic bikes.

One of my GS1000's was a 9 second drag bike, I thought it was wasted on me as I was no drag racer, so I installed the engine into a road bike frame, and loved the 2nd and third gear wheelies, and 150 (+) MPH top speed. Cheers, Terry. ;D

I was at a friends place way back in the 80's, I walked down to the letter box {mail box} with her old Dad just being polite, it was a very long driveway and he was quite old, anyway, as we passed an old garage/shed half way down the drive I spotted an old 1969 V8 4speed Monaro {Aussie muscle car}, it was dirty but dead straight and no rust, I asked him about it and he said that it had been sitting there with a blown diff for a couple of years and his son wasn't interested in fixing it, I asked him what he wanted for it and he said, "if you like it and can fix it, you can have it, FREE, I couldn't get a tow truck there fast enough.... ;D  Wish I still had it, they are worth a small fortune now... :(
