1972 CB750 K1 Build: Project State Property
« on: February 02, 2016, 04:22:45 PM »
So I figured I'd start a little thread documenting my progress on my 72' CB750 Four. I've been wanting an older bike for the past couple years and have been VERY patiently waiting for the right bike. I found 2 that I was ready to pounce on and I initially was skeptical about the one I purchased because of the price and pictures and wasn't sure it would pan out. The contender, which I ended up passing up on, was a 77 CB750 for $2K with approx 10K miles in pristine condition.

I opted for the $1,500 asking price 72' that i STOLE for $500 - hence I've nicknamed "State Property".

It came with a title and was not running. The PO was a very nice guy and was as honest as he could be and I felt confident it was the right move. I wanted to bring something back to life..

I know ogsmakdade outside of this forum and know he's very good with anything mechanical, so convinced him to come with me and chaperon to make sure I was making the right move. When we brought it home, we immediately received the stink eye from the wives, so we knew our time was limited. We threw a good battery in there and tried starting...no luck. We pulled the air box and sprayed some ether...no luck.

The stink eye was growing and we knew we'd have to pick it up another day, or we wouldn't live to see the bikes again...

So in between working and keeping the family happy, I decided to check my spark...nothing. I know the coils "rarely" go and yada yada yada...I wanted to replace them - so I did - along with caps, wires, and plugs. I then checked my points and it seemed the PO had put on a brand new set, so I was ready to go. I checked my spark and it was back..

Keep in mind...the electrical work here is not final. This was just to see if I could get it running...so don't crucify the hack job - it'll get cleaned up later..

Make sure you don't drink lots of that (last pic) and then decide to do some work on your bike or you might regret it - don't ask me how I know that! ::)

So after I got the spark going again, we started to address the fuel issue. After years of ethanol sitting around and a #$%*ty liner job, we tried cleaning the petcock to see if it was salvageable. Even after 3 cycles in the ultrasonic cleaner, we determined it was shot, so we might as well toss it and try starting her up again with starting fluid.

I'm amazed that I didn't end up running out of the garage in flames as I was standing on the other side of the air box, wondering why my legs were damp....

It was either pee running down your leg from the excitement of hearing your bike run for the first time, or the starting fluid I thought I was spraying into the carbs...  Either way, not smart to stand so close to an open flame source garage heater
