-Project Suzzie-
« on: February 07, 2016, 05:21:47 AM »
Yesterday morning I stumbled across a 1982 Suzuki GS400E. I am lucky in the fact that my area is full of junk, hacked up non titled bikes. Add to that no means of which to go get one.

I quickly sent an email in the wee hours hoping for a reply. You know how CL can be. Well, he did call, we talked, made a deal and I deposited the money in his account. I mentioned the fact that I would have to make arrangements to pick it up of which he replied "for a few bucks" he would deliver it. Great! $100 cover it? Yup. Would cost me a lot more to rent a U-Haul not to mention a 260 mile round trip. No brainer. With purchase with delivery $650.

Original owner since new, 11K on the clock, original minus the luggage rack and sissy bar, original owners manual and bill of sale when new. Stored inside it's entire life. Big plus. States the bike will run if I have a battery. I do, will see.  ;)

Still working on just what year this thing is. Titled 82 but the parts fische say 83. Working on that before ordering parts.

Specs as I know it:

The 1982 Katana styled GSX400E was offered in the Katana silver or red. Appart from the "sweet Katana" estetics, there were some technical changes:
 1) New ignition fully electronic (previous one had a mechanical centrifugal advance system) and ignition advance goes to 30º from previous 20º
2) Carburation tuned to adapt it to exhaust modifications
 3) Electrical fuel tank gauge
 4) New frame, special mention to rear swinging arm getting 40 mm longer
 5) Steering column strongly triangled, turning on conical bearings
 6) Anti-dive front fork
 7) Engine cover screws changed from cross to hexicon head
The changes in the motor and cycle parts make it a more consistent and brilliant bike.

Originally the GSX400E was offered with a single disk front brake and a anti-dive system fitted on the left side only. Because of the construction, according to some owners, the front fork felt strange at full braking from high speed. The single disk was good enough for stopping the bike but a version with double-disk and anti-dive system for both sides was available for the GSX400E from 1982 year's model in order to get rid of the odd behavior. I'm afraid I don't know if the double disk version was standard in some countries or if it was a option, the pictures here below shows the both versions.

The 1982 GSX400SZ colors (in France) were Red and Silver Grey.

GSX400E 1982
 Overall Length: 2 105 mm (82.9 in)
Overall Width: 755 mm (33.5 in)
 Overall Height: 1 095 mm (43.1 in)
 Wheelbase: 1 415 mm (55.7 in)
Dry Weight: 173 kg (381 lbs)
 Engine type: Air-cooled 398 cc parallel twin, DOHC, 8 valves. 44 hp/ 9.500 rpm, 3,7 kg-m/ 8.000 rpm.

Factory photo.

Top shot, looks pretty clean. 9500 redline. Diggin the fuel gauge.

Rear view.

Left side. Bike needs a bath. Bad!

Right side. Ouch! Told me on the phone it was not that bad, could be pulled out. I don't think so. Maybe? No idea at this time. Still wasn't a determent for me. Man, that's a whack alright. Looks like a fix and repaint to me at some point unless I can score one in better shape.

So, plan on taking my time with this one. No hurry to get it done but rather something to keep busy in the Shop.

To be continued.

Thanks Steve! Yeah, this will work just fine. Having it brought to me is a big plus. Never hurts to ask huh? Found out my Step Father will be giving me his Ford Exploder in the future when we work out the details. In Phoenix now but at least I'll have something to tow a U-Haul trailer in the future.

Currently just the Ducati. Upgraded the whole front end last year. Showa adjustable forks (S2R1000), SKF seals, new OEM bushings and Race Tech springs to weight with Super Slick fork oil. Race Tech did the work, I supplied the parts.  ;) Brembo 320 mm rotors,Brembo Gold Line calipers, Ferodo shoes, Brembo radial MC, Rizoma handlebars (White), 848 reservoirs I fabricated and SS fastners from Pro Bolt all around. Topped off with a Matris steering damper. Big difference, well worth the money spent. (A lot!)

It's done.  ::) Well, on hold for now.  ;D I have a complete Ducati front end for your next café project.  :o

Keep your eyes open for parts if you would please eg: fuel tank. Not sure if it's fixable or not.

That tank is repairable, you just need to find the right PDR guy.

There are tanks out there...

Thanks Steve. I just looked and didn't see that one. It's not the right tank however. Wrong model but close.  Probably work.

It's not on the priority list but looking just the same. Finding anyone around here will be difficult but I will send it out if needed.

Well, I sure didn't notice it! Joined a GS forum and it was brought to my attention that this model was never offered in the States.  :o  They offered a 450 version in 1983.

I'll have to call the parts house with vin and see which model I would order parts from since it's a 400 cc motor. Should all be the same in that model range with exception to the body panels and fuel tank which are from the 1983 450 cc model. Carburetor parts instantly come to mind. No wonder I couldn't find anything. Wrong model for the year.

First thing was to verify the title. Yes, Virginia. Nevada plate in picture must be from another bike. I did get a picture of the title. Looks legal but I'll look in person.

The giveaway was the picture of the instruments. Kilometers.

That crease will com up, but the paint is damaged to the point that a repaint will be required to conceal the damage. A crease stretches the metal and cracks the paint. Even the best PDR guy can't fix "broken". If you come up short on locating a guy, send it to me. At least I'll get the crease out and leave you with little work for a repaint.

By the way, is it a single layer metal shell, or is there a fuel cell within it? I'm thinking that year was only a metal tank -

Thank you so much for that offer. I'll probably take you up on that.

The bike is being delivered sometime this week and I'll check that out. I would say a single layer. At some point I'll have my friend paint it and the rest of the bike.

My main concern now is finding parts for this model. Still searching for a Canandian part supplier for a Canadian parts Fische.  Going to call Babbitts today to see which model also fits this model. This model was not brought to the states in 1982 it only makes sense that this motor was used elsewhere.

I was told on the GS forum that the 450 cc model was completely different on the top end. I just need to pin-point which carburetors for a rebuild. BS34 is what I'm reading. I would think the only change would be jetting.

I'll verify tank when it arrives and get some more pictures. Thank's again for your offer.

Link does in fact not work. I'll get to that.

Surprised just how many different models they manufactured. I called a Vendor today and she told me model not found. First thought was this is a shady deal. Upon further research the frame and title numbers match. Good thing!

You would think Suzuki would have all models available in the USA but in fact it's not the case at all. A member from the GS forum posted the Canadian link. Now I can cross reference part numbers or at least check them against USA specs. As you know manufactures would not make different motors for different Country's. At least I would hope so.

I thought so too. He's currently painting my side covers and tail piece.
The color is Kawasaki "Candy Gold" which is correct for a '74, obviously is looks brown, but has gold metallic in it [not visible in the pic]
