John, nice work on the buffing. It is messy work and a real pita on parts with small recesses and tight radiuses. Sanding through to 800 or 1000 really brings up the luster faster with less time on the buffer. Honda didn't use really good aluminum in early motors and it was in part due to resources post war and their lack of the natural resources in Japan. They really started improving metal quality in the 80s and Suzuki I believe was blessed to have used better metal from the getgo on their motors.
The Honda cars went through the same metal issues on early cars sheet metal. They were using a lot of recycled metal in their refineries making the metals that were used in the body panels of cars. It wasn't refined enough to get the oxides out of the metal and they didn't use good antic-corrosion treatments.

But progress. Picked up the powder coating work (80 mile round trip) and installed the new bearings with a vary large vice. Railroad grade.

Did a little mockup.

Rotor back from TrueDisk.

And mocked up on wheel with New Avon tire. It will be quite a while before any of this is mounted.

Rear wheel mockup. Sprocket being returned to fleabay seller. List one thing, send another doesn't fly with me. I'll eat the return ship to prove a point.

TrueDisk does nice looking work. How much do they thin the rotors?

No more than needed I would think. Always give Tom a call.

What I did was mic'ed the rotor in several places. If memory serves me correctly it varied between 4.90 to 5.00 +/-. As long as it's not below minimum good to go. Mine was 4.5 minimum.

Today I removed the stator cover for some final sanding. I got it down with 1500 and liked how it looked. The brushed effect. Followed up with Deep Purple polish.

You can see the difference between the covers. Sprocket cover was done with a buffing wheel.

Next I sanded the sprocket cover with 1500 then polish. Much better.

Need to figure out how to remove the emblem. Two OEM emblems showed up on flea bay last week. Jumped right on that!

If there aren't visible fasteners on the inside of that cover for the the emblem, they are likely just glued on. Very thin stamped aluminum that are glued on with super awesome Japanese vintage glue. Try taking a heat gun to it and seeing if that helps out any. Kinda like that little plate that is on the idiot light cluster on CB750s 550s etc.

That round black emblem is definitely Glued-on.

Yes, yes it is. I have OEM replacements that have a 3m adhesive on the back.

The clutch side will be easy as there is a hole in the cover. Not so on the stator side.

I'll start with heat gun first.

All I did Steve is just sanding. Heavy marks with 600 then gradually moved higher. If the aluminum was smooth I just used 1500. Soak paper in soapy water and a spray bottle of the same.

Follow with Purple polish using cloth applicator and clean toweling.

Believe me this is not my forte but it looks pretty good for a polishing novice.

Slight difference - I've gotten beautiful girls drunk on margaritas so I could bed them and I've gotten myself drunk when they weren't so beautiful!

I've gotten myself drunk when they weren't so beautiful!

Looking for suggestions to clean these up. Suzuki made different lengths depending on destinations. Still looking for shorter stalks for the rear. Have found a few but cost prohibitive so I need to make an attempt on these.

Lightly sand down with fine grit paper than acetone?

Sand til smooth ending with 600 grit or finer. Then paint with engine enamel - yes, sounds weird but recently did my 550F gauges and came out great.
Learned this trick from the guy who restored my H1 gauges.

I've seen plastic buffed to perfection but you really need to know what you are doing, I've also seen plastic restored using tooth paste as the sanding compound, tooth paste works well on clear plastic too...

Worked on the rear turn signals this morning. Wet sanded the heavy stuff with 600, lighter marks with 800. Followed up with 1500 then 2000 grit. Polished up with toothpaste then applied some Black Max leaving it dry completely. (suppose to wipe off)
