What are these dang cb550's really worth??
« on: November 08, 2006, 08:13:57 PM »
I love the cb550's but these prices are getting ridiculous. Or maybe it's California which is higher priced. There is a guy who is selling one with 30,000 miles that needs "TLC" for $1500, there is another who has a cb550 supersport with an ugly two up seat & no baffle in exhaust (lost it) & it won't even start up & he wants $1500 for it. Then a buddy of mine wants $1750 for his that is a "cafe" (20k miles, clubman bars, some parts missing) & to top it all off there is a beautiful one in Wisconsin for $3500!!! What the deal? Can someone please break this down for me? What should these things really be worth? Here are some examples:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&viewitem=&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ebay.com%3A80%2Fsearch%2Fsearch.dll%3Fquery%3D280043569092%2B%26MfcISAPICommand%3DGetResult%26ht%3D1%26ebaytag1%3Debayreg%26srchdesc%3Dn%26maxRecordsReturned%3D300%26maxRecordsPerPage%3D50%26SortProperty%3DMetaEndSort%26fvi%3D1&item=280043569092

http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/mcy/231124286.html

http://madison.craigslist.org/mcy/232177200.html

Someone clue me in. I really want one of these but I want to be able to know what they are really worth & or why they are priced so high. Are people really getting this much for them? Thanks!

as to what something is worth, only as much as you are prepared to pay for it. I can't comment on prices where you live but here in NZED the SOHC is getting to be very much sought after, but you can't give away a 750DOHC

wow thanks for that link aptech. these estimates go along with what I thought. I do understand that what something is worth is how much one will pay for it. Just like if you put $5000 into a bike, it doesn't mean that you can charge $5000 more when you sell it. It is all relative. It is just weird because these bikes don't seem rare enough to command these prices. Unless there is some sort of social trend where these are becoming all the rage. I tend to think not. I do live in Los Angeles again where even a bottled water at a "hip" night club will run ya $7! Are the super sports more rare because that is what I have been looking for mostly? Anyone know of any good used bike dealers in Wisconsin where they specialize in these types of bikes? Thanks all!

I think the NADA guides are pretty close to accurate, maybe a touch low,but Ebay gets a little crazy. With that said, I bought 2 550's a little over a year ago, one running in decent condition and the other with a dual disk setup, complete but partially disassembled with the carbs pulled, for $1900. The "parts bike" was 400 of that total, and the engine that was in it now powers my cafe for the moment (just rebuilt the carbs) while I rebuild the other engine...and this was in SoCal...

I just bought my 76 CB550K in September for $750 (I live in Milwaukee, WI).  It has no dents or rust and runs great after a little seafoam in the tank.  I thought I paid a bit more than I should really.  The guy had is on Craigslistt for $1000 and lowered it to $900, finally to $750.  I only bought it because I got out bid on a 78' 750F in great shape for around $850.  Those prices seem high to me.

What part of Cali are you in?  I used to live in Costa Mesa and worked in Corona.

I have not seen many places here in Milwaukee that specializes in selling older Hondas.  I'd ask the guys at The Shop...they specialize in repairing restoring these bikes...(414) 276-6686  They are in Bayview, just south of Milwaukee, but they do not have a website.

No way. I live in Los Angeles & am originally am from Milwaukee. I am coming back to MKE next week for a couple of weeks. To visit family & hopefully find a good deal on a bike (I want a cb550 supersport, blue). What I really need is a barn find. Some near perfect bike that has been in storage forever with low miles. Something some elderly person would sell for nothing because they don't know what it is worth or don't care. If yall find one of these, please drive it over & I'll pay ya COD!

Whatever I find, I will find someone who wants to do a "rideshare" to haul it back to Cali. You want to take a road trip? :-).

You know any good mechanics there who don't charge arm & leg? I am looking into a few bikes that have been sitting for a long time & do not run. So I will need to get it running in tip top shape. Hell I may even ride the dang thing cross country! Also any salvage yards or dealers in Wisco you can recommend that sells these types of bikes? Thanks!

Oh yeah I called The Shop & all they have is a 750...

As far as mechanics...The Shop is the best place around, and they are very good people.  I'll see what I can find out for you on the salvage part...but you may want to keep an eye on Craigslist... http://milwaukee.craigslist.org/mcy/  I know I saw one listed a few weeks ago.
No can do on the roadtrip...I am headed to New York to see the Rangers play at MSG on the 21st.  I've done the MKE to LA drive 7 times solo. Take the route through Utah and Colorado...they are way better prepared for a snowstorm at this time of year than is the souther route through New Mexico, and it's beautiful any time of year.  Nebraska sucks a$$ to drive through though (sorry to thise that may live there).

People get emotional values wrapped up into asking prices. I wouldn't let asking prices get you down. You would be amazed at how much people will go down if you show up with cash in hand. It has a tendency to motivate negotiations.

my 2 cents:

old motorcycles are the hipster nation's new trend. Since most brit stuff is too expensive and unreliable to be used everyday, the 70's hondas (350 Twin and 750 four mostly), and to a lesser degree other japanese marks, have become the new hot bikes to own, and the more cafe race or bone stock the better. Unfortunatly (or fortunatly) honda sold so many of these bikes they will probably not be as valuable as the brit stuff for a long time. I remember when SOHC 750s could be bought for $100 all day long in running condition (in the late 80's - early 90's), and this year alone I have turned down $2000 and $3000 offers for my 75 K5.

Elcid,

There are good deals out there.  You just have to really keep you eyes open and be patient.  Of course a bit of luck doesn't hurt either.  I picked up my 74 550 in exchange for doing a client's 2002 tax return.  I have put a fair amount of money into the bike to get it running but it was still a good deal.  Just set the money aside so you can pounce on something when it shows up, which is usually at the most unexpected time!

Good luck!

If you read chopper mags from the 80s and even into the early 90s there is a fair amount of jap bike coverage there (mostly cb750 chops). Then the chopper thing kinda wained in the 90s and now that it has started to come back you definatly see a lot more of jap choppers around. I don't think they will ever be mainstream again (like the 70's) but there is some cool stuff out there.

That bike in San Fran has more miles on it than mine, and mine needed less work.  Same year (76) and color...what a rip for 3Gs. I did have that after market exhaust though...that must be why his is worth $2300 more than mine.  :D

I'm depressed that bikes are available at that price, at all! Here in BC you have to pay more, even for a ratbike.

got this for$1.00 off craigslist..no kidding..came with 2 extra motors, body work, all the cafe parts..has a broken oil ring in #2 cylinder & needs a re-ring..original owner, non op current since 1985 & the guy put $1500.00 into the engine back in 1982..we're talking barnet clutch, wiseco forged pistons, megacycle grizzly cam, lockhart cooler, etc...you get the point..oh yeah, he lives 3 miles from my Dads house in the Bay Area...35 minutes from my place.ha. yes i feel lucky to have found this, but i have seen 4 other bikes in similar condition on craigslist recently..one was $175.00 (500 Four), one was 350(500 four runs rough) and 2 not running but easily fixed
bikes for $100 each ( 1976 400 Four & 1972 500 Four) so they are there!! don't give up

Just judging by craigslist and ebay, seems like these bikes routinely go for twice the price in california as elsewhere. But then everything's more expensive here. I saw a gorgeous 350 twin on clist here recently for $650 and it was gone in like two hours. I might have overpaid for my bike, ($1300) but then it runs great, looks decent (if you can ignore the yamaha mufflers) and is pretty much the bike I've always wanted. 10,400 miles on the clock and all I've had to do on it is little stuff so far. True the '70s bikes are trendy, hence the scrambler and whatever else, but man I'll take an old honda over an old brit bike anyday, as far as reliability, finding parts and wrenching.
That's like hypnotizing chickens...
