square honda chopper.....anyone got one?
« on: March 04, 2019, 03:07:22 PM »
i remember a long long time ago seeing an ad in a 70s chopper mag for a square honda chopper kit.

it comprised a square tube frame, square telescopic forks, square exhaust pipes, squared off coffin tank, square handlebars etc

i've never been able to find any pics of one on the net and just wondering if anyone out there has any pics or even one of the whole bikes
i blame Terry

I saw a square chopper frame in the back of a truck Sunday at the Walneck's swap meet at Princeton Il. I didn't even take a picture of it.

I assumed it was a backyard fabbed nightmare and didn't pay much attention to be honest. It was squeezed between a couple other bikes, including a Chinese mini chopper and something I couldn't identify.

That fork even looks telescopic. Square oil seals too?

Chopper frames seem to be designed with no regard for weight. Some use solid square bar rather than tube.
A round tube is somewhat stronger in torsion and compressive load than an equivalent weight square tube, as far as I know, so a square tube with equal strength will be heavier than a round tube.. It's harder to make a frame from round because the joined ends need to be cut with a curve to meet another round tube, with square tube you just need a standard cutoff saw.
I can't imagine why anyone would try to make square fork tubes.

from memory they didn't have oil, they just had springs and the wheels were usually invaders with the 6 square spokes

I have to admit I have a soft spot for these honda 4 choppers. I don't know why. I think they're really cool. I followed the link above and I've been skimming the chopper bible. Really cool stuff. Personally i am working on my 400 right now and I have it completely apart. I like wrenching but I hate cleaning, scrubbing, polishing, etc. That step has been really hard to get through.

Reading and looking at the photos in the bible had me wondering, back in the day, did people sell half-finished chopper projects the same way that they do with cafe builds now? It's basically a meme now, 750's and 550's in a half-finished state asking $800, unfinished cafe project. "Life got in the way".

I think it happens more nowadays  on  all bikes..bobbers, choppers, cafe..
But back in the day, most guys took shop class in school..
And people made their own stuff, often in their yard,
