How screwed am I?
« on: March 02, 2016, 11:46:23 AM »
Just when everything was going so well...my 76 400F is now officially once again a rolling chassis and I'm on to painting and rebuilding the engine.

Long story short, in the process of removing the 6mm bolt that holds on the special spark advancer washer (nut), I snapped the little bugger off. How screwed am I? What does it screw into and how do I get the broken part of the bolt out? I know someone is going to say 'the end of the crankshaft, and you can't'...

And while I'm at it, how does the spark advancer come off? It seems on there pretty good.

Thanks,
Knucklehead

...so it looks like there's just a pin holding the advancer on? Once I get it off I should be able to have decent access to the broken off bolt to get it out with an easy out or something...maybe not as bad as I thought...

nevermind, under control...advancer comes off with a tap of a screw driver handle. Duh. Saw a picture of the way it comes off  in an obscure shop manual...

just need to get the broken bolt out and it's back to normal...

I did that break once. A left handed drill bit heated it up enough to back out on the bit. I didn't have to use an ez out, which was great cause I usually brake those...when that happens you're screwed.

In all the world there isn't a more cynically and incorrectly named tool than the "Ez-Out."
How many times have these things frustrated me? How many times has the job been not "EZ" and busted/stuck bolt didn't come "out?"  I lost count a very long time ago...

Left hand drill bits are what work.

If you are gonna work on old bikes and have a tendency toward hamfistedness, get a full set of these with lots of small incremental steps.  You'll use em.  Funny thing is, the more you work on old bikes, the less you find you need them.

I recently restored and sold a 77 cb750f, and am nearly finished with a (former basket case) cb750k5.  This is a place to share, learn and enjoy.  I am grateful to and for 99+% of this site's membership.
