Some oil got on my header wrap...
« on: February 15, 2016, 05:08:37 PM »
Hi everyone -

While changing oil & filter yesterday, some oil (around 1/4 cup) spilled from the filer housing and onto my wrapped 4into1 pipes. I rode it to work and of course it smoked a ton. Has this happened to any of you with wrapped pipes? It seems like this would be an incredibly common issue.

Is there an easy way to clean the oil off, or am I better off just unwrapping the pipes?

Yea, that's what I originally planned to do, but after a few rides it's still smoking quite a bit, and I'm a tad concerned about it actually catching fire - but I didn't want to get ahead of myself so I came here to ask.

I once forgot to tighten the oil line fasteners and had a fair amount of oil drip onto a wrapped exhaust... Not my brightest moment. Let it burn...it will smoke a ton but it will eventually burn off.

Don't be fooled; it only adds 26BHP. But it does help you lean  ;D

You could try a a rag soaked in Dawn detergent applied by "blotting" the area to help cut some of the oil. Let that dry and maybe it will help reduce the smoking. I too imagine its a common issue, so better protection next time. I wonder if Kott or someone makes an exhaust condom for such maintenance tasks???  ::)

I don't think you could catch exhaust wrap on fire even if you tried really hard.

Just let it burn.

Hot water mixed with Dawn in a spray bottle. Let soak and rinse well. Box fan to dry it off. You may have to repeat a few times. It will still smoke a bit after all of this though.
