$1000 for a kit back in the day was no joke.

Nice work, but where in the range does a replica lie?

Nice work, but where in the range does a replica lie?

In my case, I would say I'm duplicating 90% of it and most importantly the frame and swing arm. Some of it, making it my own.

I used the word clone here, because someone was selling those horrible replica kits for CB550. They  were only the fiberglass tank and seat and maybe swing arm. They reminded me of those Ford GT fiberglass bodies they sold to put on a VW and then called the cars FORD GT replica.
Couldn't be farther from the truth.

I didn't want to be linked with the CB550 kits

Hijack:
I have a Bimota KB-3 and I bought the book new in 2000. I'm astounded at how the book has appreciated in value. Speaking purely financially it's a better investment than the bike (although the bike's value has also increased substantially).

Problem is you can't use the book to go for a ride, and it isn't very good as a chick-magnet either...

And I've subscribed to this thread - it's going to get exciting here I'm sure!

Your right about the book. Small fortune. I ended up getting one on a deal. Its cool book. Well done.

What knowledge do you have on Bimota red paint? I was going to have the  computer sample the photos in  the book and average it out.

Still researching it.

I will be posting photos as I go.

Frame build will be over several next week.

I'll be making the rear set mounts this week.

What process are you using to create your frame? Do you have some sort of jig?

Frame started this week. No photos yet. Did finish machining new rear caliper hanger for P108 Brembo.
I start the funky swing arm frame socket pieces tomorrow and the rear set mounts.

Just curious on why you choose the Brembo units over something more exotic like AP or Fontana?

More of a classic look and Italian.
I would have loved to use Fontana, but that's about $3000 hit. Not in the budget. :-(

Thanks for the link in the Brembo thread about the Airtech oil tank inner fender. I saw that and am considering it. Let say it is on the table.

Made a few iconic swing arm frame mounts.  No fun machining 4130. These are the pieces built into the frame as sort of a socket for swing arm to fit into. The swing arm uses two bolts instead of one long axle. The bolt is custom, like a shoulder bolt with disc on the end with holes to match the frame mount. The  cluster of holes in the frame mounts are threaded. The bolt disc fits into the socket and then screwed in. You then attach the nut on the inside to secure the swing arm
It is quite the elaborate design. I have no idea why it was done this way.
Much better way to do it, but this build is all about cloning.
