77 F with earlier rear sprocket carrier, 10mm spacer???
« on: October 03, 2016, 03:04:04 PM »
I am running a 72 motor in a 77 Frame. What did you source for the rear axle spacer from the lost 10mm in the carrier? Spacer has to be 20mm(ID)x10mm.

Where i work we don't have anything to mill a 20mm IDx10mm spacer(drill bits and what not for the inside part). I can get a 20mm Drill bit for a bit of money but if i can source the parts easier i would like to.

Also which model sleeve do i use for between the wheel and Sprocket carrier? Short one from pre-77 or longer one for 77+?

might be easier to just get a different sprocket carrier, they are compatible between the K bikes.

I did the reverse. My bike is a '76 750F, but the rear wheel is from a '77F. I ended up buying a '76 K sprocket carrier to fit my wheel. Lined up perfectly.

I might even have the other carrier lying around... What wheels / setup are you running?

I've already sort of landed the easier of the options.

Option 1, Run 77F rear wheel and sprocket carrier, result is i need a 10mm offset front sprocket.
Option 2, Run 77F rear wheel with <76 sprocket carrier and just find a 20mm(ID)x10mm spacer to replace the 10mm I lost with the newer style carrier.

So far option 2 has been free for me. Option 1 costs additional the $70 offset sprocket.

I'm a bit confused on your setup. What bike, year, and what rear wheel?

It sounds like you have a 77 bike with a 77 rear wheel. A 77 sprocket carrier should line up perfectly, no?

It doesnt have to be just one spacer.  You could stack two or more spacers.  Access to a lathe makes this very easy.  I think there may even be a combination of stock spacers that works, but I dont have details for ya.  Ypu can even stack washers.  The center hole doesnt have to be perfect.  Even if the spacer is kind of sloppy on the axle, it cant move around once the axle nut is tightened.
If it works good, it looks good...

yeah thats what i have been thinking. I can find M20 washers and stack them, but i have become kind of a form Nazi some i am trying to avoid that.

We have a lathe at work, but nothing to bore out a 20mm hole. Which sounds crazy but... i cant find anything to do that will.

Any lathe can do it ..drill to 3/4 inch then bore out to 20mm easy..

This is a 2.5 out of 10 for lathe work...10being the hardest..

Just get a collection of spacers from the junkyard, ebay, members here etc. ....and stack them, cut them down as needed
If it works good, it looks good...

I work in aviation. We have a machine shop with a lathe. But I can't find a way to get the 20mm bore. Most aviation things are much smaller than 20mm.

Use a boring bar.

If the lathe has no boring bars, WHAT ARE you using it for ?

Watching with interest. Have a 76F engine that is going in a 78K frame.

Well I guess it's time I learn to use a boring bar.

Watching with interest. Have a 76F engine that is going in a 78K frame.

I used a 78 engine in a 75 frame. Had to make up the extra 10mm offset caused by the double row output shaft bearing on the 77/78 engine. Swapped out the swing arm for 77/78 (+10mm) and used a 77/78 rear sprocket carrier (+10mm). You may be able to get by with an earlier swing arm but then you have the +10mm upper shock mount offset to deal with also. The spacers are all the same as far as I know, it's the offset of the other parts.

Guess you could always use an earlier rear carrier (-10mm) to align with the 76 output shaft/sprocket and have a rear spacer machined?
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

I ordered what I think will work. Got 4 spacers with a bore of 20mm but the thickness is 11.1mm. I'm sure I can run it on a belt sander for enough time to run that mm off

Make a mandrel , press it on or true it up.
Or put the spacer in the chuck, clock it in, and turn to size....easy...
