Well, I've decided on a winter project bike and sinc e a CBX is out of the question, I've happily decided to knock a couple cylinders off & stick with Honda 4.

I want to find something that is not a complete basket case (preferably the engine turns over) and seem to be attracted to the 550 moreso than the 750.

My first question though:  If I find an 80 or 81 model 650, how much of the bike is interchangeable with the older model 550.   Comparing the two (550 or 650) they appear very similar in places, but when you stand back and look at the whole bike the lines is obviiously quite different.

I'll be reading a lot of posts, but a few replies to this question will help me sift thru all the info you guys have here.

BTW: If anyone here is on TriumphRat.net, I have the same username there.

Welcome, dardoonk.  I am without clue as to interchangeability of newer 650 parts with older 550 parts; however, I'm sure someone here can enlighten you.  If you don't get any nibbles in this intro thread, post the question to the tech forum.  Good luck on finding a project bike.
