HI "CB750 Cafe Racer Fan",
I haven't changed them, they were perfectly flat and full of "springness" still.

Is there a reason why I should change them ? Right Now I've closed the head with the old one. Am I making a big mistake ?

I do not think it is necessary, but it might be a good idea with 36 year old rings along with a light cylinder hone and lapping the valves.

I'll let more experienced engine building voices chime in.

Hi, based on the condition of the ring and the rest, I'm pretty sure that someone at one point did changed them. I really don't think these are the original one. The bike is marked as having about 150,000km so it seems a lot for the rings to look like they did. I didn't lapped the valve but that is one of the steps that I would have wanted to do. Not saying that I will not have to do it later.

When I rode the bike in the past, it was very smooth from rev from 500-3500, after which it became a bit more bumpy increased. Not sure what it was due to.

When you say the motorcycle was bumpy, was it vibrating at high rev -- indicating internal imbalance -- or only when on the road where it may be attributable to suspension, bearings, etc.?

Hi,
Sorry for the misdescription. When I say bumpy, I was talking about the how the engine was able to rev from 4k RPM to 8k RPM. Even when on neutral and bike on stand. I was describing how the engine behaved. I'm not knowledgeable enough to be able to pin point what part/portion of the engine was causing the issue. May be valves that were not properly seating, may be issue with the carbs, vacuum, clogged fuel filter or else.

My knowledge stops here. I was still able to get to high rev, just not as smoothly as it was going from 500-3500. May be you guys might have an idea of what could cause that.

It's hard to tell without seeing it. It could even be an out of balance crank or rotor.

I'm keeping on eye on this project! I just started workin on my own 80 cb650.. funny my upper gasket likely looks the same with the rtv all over, mines leaking like a sieve though..

Hi Everyone,
I've finally got the old stem bearing seat from the post. I've install the new as per a video found on youtube.(

I didn't freeze the new seat nor heated up the bike frame to get the new seat in but I had to use hammer and wood block. Still it's now in place, I've used a pipe to seat it properly as done in the video. With a right size pipe to ensure that I wasn't hammering the mobile part of the bearing. Sorry I have no pic of the seated bearing. I will try to get one later once I removed the masking for the paint. And yes, in my hurry to see if the bearing was fitting, I forgot that I hadn't painted the part. So I've masked it.

Here is what the parts looks like. I've cut the post on the upper part of the triple tree where the old handle bar used to attach. I didn't flattened it completely and I might used it to rest a bracket that will hold the new tach/speedo .... that I still need to find/buy. I've seen some nice one but 350$/500$ is a bit on the expensive side. Plus I would like to go digital instead of using a mechanical one. But I still have some research to do before I get to find what I want. For sure a mechanical tach/speedo would be a straight fit or even the old one, but that thing is ginormous(the original). So I'm looking to size it down as well as the front light.

Swing Arm
Here is some of the work I've done on the swing arm. I've got it cleaned and re-painted. However, after removing the grease nipple, while holding it in my hand and trying to gently clean it it broke in two. I still think I'm lucky that the fillet part didn't break in the swing arm. Now I've got to buy a new one.

Engine installation
I did put back the engine on the frame last week. Unfortunately, I've tried doing it myself. BIG MISTAKE. That thing is just not meant to go back there. I cannot imagine that they haven't been able to make it so that it is easier to do than that. I've finally been able to get it back on but with some bruises for me and the bike. I will have to remove my top covers and repaint them as I damaged them badly in the process. There are some other notch here and there. But each time I work on the bike I find some extra scratch that I did when I've re-installed the engine.

Hi Everyone,
Rear Shocks
Latest work was on the rear suspension. I've removed the shock and dismantled them. Since I don't have the fancy apparatus that they have in the book I made one myself. Not as elegant, but it does do the job. Since the damper was covered with rust specks I brushed it and then polish it back. For the covers, I wanted them to be black. I took pic with and without as I'm not sure I want to have them. The spring was also covered with rusk specks, I had been able to clean to outside, however the inside still has some since I wasn't able to reach.

One of the thing I realised is that the wheel is awfully closed to the hoop. I did set the shock to the max strengtheness. I will have to put the tail light over the hoop or on the rear fender if I decide to put one.

When you have an almost bare frame, the best method is to lay the engine on its side raised slightly on blocks, the lower the frame around it. With the 650, you also remove the right lower frame portion, too, beforehand. It is by far the easiest CB middleweight to deal with.

And wrap your frame with a couple layers of painters tape (motor covers too) for protection. Often if you drop the oil pan it makes things a LOT easier.

Hi Everyone,

Seat
I've had some time this week so I built the seat. I've used an old camping blue mat that i glued in layer before shaving with a exacto blade. It seems a bit funny when you look at the part but remember that when installed it is bent flat and thus looks "ok". I did sit on it and I think it will make for a bit too hard of a seat.

Then I will have to cover it. This will come sometime later as I will have to brush on my knitting skills.

Here is another part update.

Rear Fender
For the rear fender, I decided to use to old fender. In order to do so, I had to make myself a bracket that would hold the fender in place. I just build one out of a flat iron bar. I did weld it and it seems solid. I hammered the thing and it stayed in place. My concern though is that I fear it might be to close to the wheel. I'm not heavy(175lbs) so if I set the shock to the hardest, I should be ok but I will have to run some test with something like a speed bump in a safe area just to be on the safe side. If it touches, I will have to buy longer rear shock and at this point I don't know how long I should go for. The fender will be black, this is just a dry fit.

You might also gain some additional clearance by slightly bobbing the fender.

Seat cover

It's been a while again, and it seems that life often gets in the way of my project. But I have been able to make some more progress on my seat. After checking to have cover done professionally(250-300$), I've decided to do it myself. I went and bought at Fabricville (fabric/tissue store we have in Montreal) 15$ worth of material and started sewing.

I wanted to have a quilted seat cover and the rest made out of smaller parts. My sewing skill being what there are, it's far from perfect. There are some folds That I would like not to have but I assume that is what makes the difference between 15$ and 300$ =-).

One feature that I had on my mindmap what a holding strap. I've remembered after completing the cover that this was something I wanted to have. So by adding that feature, It covers also some of the imperfection of the seat.

Hi Everyone,

Component relocation

Part of the look that I want is to reduce the bulk of the items that are on the centre console. Right now the original Tach, Speedo and light display(neutral, high beam, oil, flasher) are humongous. I would like to replace them all with a single dial. For that I still have to look I would like something that is max 2" in diam. that contains tach/speedo/few lights. The problem I have is that my controls are analogue. So how difficult it would be to have them digital(as in connectic, not display; I don't want the spinning cable) remains to be seen. Also, I don't want to spend 500$ on a display either. So this part is still up in the air.

For the rest of the items that were there:
- Ignition key
- Choke control
- fuse box

I wanted to have the ignition key under the seat so I had to build a bracket that was going to hold it. I've used that bracket to re-locate the fuse box since I'd removed the little compartment that was housing it. And there was also a the spark unit component that was already under the seat but that was in the way when using my seat pan so I've relocated this one as well.

I had another issue, since I removed the housing for the ignition/fuse, I've lost the bracket that was holding my choke lever. I've made one that I bolted on the old handle bar hole. I'm not sure I like the look. Plus I might need to have a place to put some LED for the, flasher/oil/high beam/neutral so I might just redo a bigger one that will attach on both(4 of them) anchor point and will have an extension for the choke lever.

Hi Everyone,

Flasher

Here was the next issue encountered. The flashers. Once I plugged everything back I've tested that the flasher/brake light, etc ... were still working. I realised that the flasher would light up but stayed lit instead of blinking. I've worked back to the little can that makes the flasher blink. I've opened it see it was working with little help so I assume that the capacitor was likely dead. Anyway, when I've plugged my new LED flasher, they weren't working at all so I would have had to change something. Digging in my school memory, I've remembered that LED work on current and not on voltage. So I got my electronic kit box and started trying different resistance. With about 100 ohm I have able to get the LED flashed to properly light up. Still I had to changed the flashing unit so I bought(haven't received it yet) and 2 pin Motorcycle Electronic LED flasher relay. They says that it would work with LED flasher. So once I receive it, I will be able to complete the flasher installation.

Needless to say that got rid of the ginormous original flasher and tail light and replaced it with smaller bullet like flasher. I will post some pics once I finalise the location for these.

You could spend a couple of hundred on an Acewell or Koso gauge that will integrate everything, including idiot lights.
