550K Exhaust Options
« on: February 28, 2016, 03:50:20 PM »
Hello all, I've been looking to replace my 78' 550K exhaust due to age. One of the pipes was rotter all the way through. The other three are in good shape minus the baffles being toast. I was looking at this exhaust and wanted to see if anyone had any experience with this brand? Also any other suggestions would be great. Wouldn't mind a 4 into 1 or a 4 into 2 combo.

There's a few guys on the forum running that brand, but I believe they're all 750 (not that it matters on quality). Reports all seem to be very favorable and figment just fine.

I just got one with a "classic straight muffler" that looks more like a yoshi pipe. Waiting to finish my front wheel to get it on before I can install and run it to see how it sounds. I will say the quality looks pretty impressive for the price. All the welds appear to be tig and it seems to fit well. Pipes are not super thin but appear to be pretty sturdy. Muffler bracket/mount is very simple and looks good. No weird clamps or exhaust straps to look out of place.

You certainly get marks for styling but does it offer any advantages?

Would it be better to split and make it a 3 and 3 output for less restriction and styling...

yasssss, why didnt i think of that!!?!?!

nah, its all for style. there is no performance benefit. i tried to make something a little wild, while also paying a little homage to the 4 into 4 design of the original. i was limited by funds: those cone eng muffs are no the cheapest thing to get here in canuckistan. with an unlimited budget i would have gone for the 4 into 1 into 5 to keep a little bit more mid-range.  8)

I am building it for my wife. her only design criteria is 'i want it to be loud'. it is internally baffled to mimic a stock pipe, and there is a butterfly in there that is operated by a second choke cable so that when i start it in my driveway i can dial up more baffling until i get out of my driveway so the neighbours don't get too pissed.

ha ha...this reminds of a word game me and my best bud play while we are wrenching together...it begins like this, "Dude wait til you hear my 4 into 4 into 1 into 8 exhaust I am building."
"Yeah? bet it won't compare to the 2 into 4 into 6 into 1 that I am building for my Ironhead..."  etc. etc.
If it works good, it looks good...

Man, wish I had seen that about 3 weeks ago Jimmy. I just got one of the delkevic setups. I just ran it for the first time today, first start up since november. Sounds good so far.

Sorry about that. I was saving it but decided to raise funds for a pair of Fox Podium RC2 shocks. They're pretty expensive.

Hey no problem. I didnt come out of pocket a whole lot more but its no kerker. Probably sounds clos though with the little muffler it came with. Sure will save some weight over my 4-2 that was rusting out.

+1

I would go that route if I decided to ditch my MotoGP Werks system. Those CE cones have a great tone. I like the Delkevic headers in that it appears oil changes would be a snap!

Reaper... Is that straight muffler from Delkevic too?

That was a really big "IF," Stev-o. No plans to ditch it anytime soon, if ever. I've only had a half riding season of enjoyment with it.

Has Chris stopped making them?

Not sure about 550, but I bought one for my 750 from him last month.

That Delkevic looks good on the bike.  I like the position of the granny rocker so you can sit there and just... look.
I recently restored and sold a 77 cb750f, and am nearly finished with a (former basket case) cb750k5.  This is a place to share, learn and enjoy.  I am grateful to and for 99+% of this site's membership.

Yes, straight muffler is from Delkevic. It looks good and sounds awesome. Takes all the high pitched tinny sound out and keeps the deeper rumble. Sounds like a well toned 4 cylinder bike off idle.

And yes, the granny rocker was a gift from my granny. It is there precisely to just sit.....and drink beer.

I don't believe you.... Maybe you should post a video with good sound of the bike running.  A flyby would be nice too.  ;D   Just searched YT... can't find a vid of a 550 with this Delkevic. Found a million VFR Delkevic vids (and watched every one), but no 550's.

There is one on there, a member here made one and posted it. If you search on here ebay Delkevic or something it is in his thread. Cb550 delkevic on yt should yield it as well. I can try to get some video worth putting up this weekend.
