Bolt diagram for splitting the cases?
« on: February 29, 2016, 11:31:17 AM »
Working on getting the engine split open today, and I'm using Hondaman's book, as well as a Clymer. Problem is, I'm not sure what bolts actually need to come out. In Hondaman's book, the crankshaft supports were described as "nuts", when as far as I can tell, they're long bolts, and it seemed like at least one bolt was missing in the description of what needs to come out from the top. Not knocking the book, I'm just really not sure where to go from here...what needs to come out for this? Is there a diagram anywhere?

What is "all of them" though? There are bolts holding the oil pan on, do those come out?

Basically, I'm worried that some bolt I take out is only supposed to be taken out after separating the cases, as maybe it holds something in place?

Follow Hondaman's book.
Look at the torque sequence charts shown for the top and bottom of the cases. Remove all of these.
Take off your oil pan and take out your oil pump.
(Clean it and install ELANS oil pump kit, prime it, and reinstall after your cases are together)
You'll also need to remove the shifter mechanism, and the three screws of the oiler that hold the ends of the main and countershafts.

There are no worries about removal sequence like that.

Your Clymer book should have the bolt diagram.  I've attached the diagram from mine.  Also attached is the torque sequence for the lower crankcase bolts.  Since large lower bolts are also the crankshaft bearing bolts, you should ideally remove them in the OPPOSITE of the tightening sequence (remove the small bolts first, then the big ones).
