'78 kz400

Helping a friend get her first learner bike running for this season.  She got a really good deal on a '78 kz400. Going through it top to bottom to make sure it's running good and safe.

Tank is in great shape and covers look good except for missing one of the emblems (She may even have that).  Bike should clean up nicely.

Bike came with a newer Mikuni Carb and this fancy intake manifold :o  This came off with a quickness

But it also came with the original rack of carbs that are cleaning up nicely.  Ordered a set of K&N Pods to use as the original airbox is long gone....Along with the starter  ::)  So this bike is kick only at this time.   Ordered new throttle cable and some bowl and mixture screw o-rings to get everything back together.  Hopefully carb jetting wont take too long to get sorted.

Those CV carbs aren't gonna like those pods. You should be able to get an air box on ebay for pretty cheap - I'd go that route. My KZ400 had pods on it when I first got it and it never was right until I put the box back on. Otherwise, looks great man.

Hmm....we'll give it a shot to see how they work.  If not I'll toss the pods into storage and look to source an airbox.  Getting ready to go on vacation for a few weeks, so will play around when back.

One PITA is those carb passage plugs.  The ones in these were destroyed.  Been looking everywhere, but they look to be unavailable anymore.  We're going to try to make some plugs out of some small tapered rubber stoppers.

Gas will probably eat up regular ol' rubber - like the kind in stoppers you'd get at a hardware store. There are several bikes that used a simliar setup. Maybe you can find some of those and they'll work? CB350 twin comes to mind...

From what I've gathered looking at pics, the plugs do not appear to be the same.  Need to try and figure something out as everywhere I look, it appears these are no longer available.
