K8 transmission gear bushing orientation
« on: March 03, 2016, 08:51:56 AM »
I'm starting to think not many people dive this deep into the engine, as information is scarcer the further I go.

The books I'm reading (clymer and hondaman) both say the countershaft spinning gears have oilite bushings...mine don't. Mine have removable bushings, 2 of 3 are attached to their thrust washer.

What's confusing to me is that there are 2 oil holes on the bushing, but only 1 on the shaft.  There appears to be a recess around the inside of the bushing such that if it were placed with the shaft oil hole not matched with one of the bushing holes, it might distribute oil to both holes

Either case could result in under oiling if I'm wrong, so...any thoughts?

I ripped apart my trans twice, after i mounted my engine and rode, just to sort out a shifting issue.  So yeah...some here have stripped these trans to the bones  ;D
Those bushings are fine.  I had those on my F3 trans as well.  Just be sure one of the holes lines up.
Here's mine...

These bushings have 2 holes...if one were lined up with the shaft hole. The other hole would be opposite doing nothing.

I think you're OK.
I removed my last post to not confuse.

yes, I noticed that too.  Actually it led me to wrong conclusion that my transmission was not assembled correctly when I was trying to solve my shifting problem.

My guess is the  bushing was made for more than this application - typical for Honda -  and it was easier to make just one  type.

The one hole is plenty to keep gear splines oiled and happy.

Awesome, I'll line up a hole.

On a related note, do you replace snap rings? I usually do when they're universal or cheap (brake master cylinders, fork seals) but these seem pretty precise.

Reuse the ones you have as their orientation is critical to proper gear engagement.

I bought new snap rings, did not feel like taking chances with my troublesome transmission.

As far as orientation, the snap ring has - from production - sharp edge and round edge.  It is necessary to install the round edge towards the element you want to keep in place.

Alright, I put em together with the old circlips. It didn't really need disassembling anyway, everything looks great, but the shafts had to come out to clean the cases completely anyway.
