Top triple clamp compatibility - 750 fit a 550
« on: November 11, 2006, 09:11:49 AM »
I did some searching in FAQ, and couldn't find the answer I was looking for, so I'll ask here.

Anyone know if a 750 top triple clamp will fit on a 550? I need one and have been offered a 750 clamp, but wanna make sure it will fit.

Thanks in advance!

Eric

...I think those-that-know are waiting to see if you'll tell them what year and what model 750...and what year and what model 550...   :P

But I can say that the Fiche shows different part numbers for a 1973 CB500 and CB750K top clamp...

That doesn't mean you can't interchange them...Just that there is a difference...Which may not matter...
...stock 1972 CB500 '500 Four' undergoing re-assembly...
...Stock 1972 CL450 'Scrambler' also being re-assembled...

Sorry but no it won't fit, both use 35mm forks and the fork spacing is the same but the offset (center steering axis to center fork tube) is much greater on the 750.

See? I knew someone would havethe answer - thanks!
I didn't know the year of the 750, so I didn't post that - moot point now though.

Strangely enough, I tried this in the opposite direction last week.  As stated, the spacing from the head stem is considerably different.

not sure if it matters but I have a top triple from a 79 CBX on my 550 front end. For clip-ons only though!

That's why I need another triple clamp. I am going to mill off the handlebar mounts and then weld on a thicker top plate like some older race bikes did. Reshape the aluminum top plate and then powdercoat it.

Should this fail, I'll just make another complete top clamp out of aluminum stock, but thought this idea would both look better and be easier.

just find a top triple to a 79 honda CBX then... shave off the instrument mounting bracket, bead blast the ugly black paint off, and powder coat or leave raw aluminum. There's the same ingition mounting holes as the 550 as well.
