Author Topic: I've been offered a 79 Yamaha 1100 for $50 (Read 3785 times)

I seem to be falling into the used bike business by accident. I have just been approached with a chance to pick up a '79 Yamaha 1100 for only $50. The bad boy weighs over 600 lbs so I am looking at renting a trailer if I go for this. I have no intention of rebuilding it. I guess I would strip it down, clean the parts up and sell them.

Now the problem of telling my wife about this! Hmmmm

Has anyone owned one of these? I know there are two models. I don't know which one it is. I do know it has no title and no carbs. The owner bought it for the carbs and is passing it along. It does turn over, so at least the engine isn't frozen up.

I'd jump on it, like duster said. Well maybe not as graphic as he insinuated. I wanted to buy a 79'
XS1100, back in the 80's. Just couldn't come up with the cash. $1500 for one loaded with a Wind
Jammer, bars and bags. Even at that, it was pretty peppy as I remember. The Midnight Special was
pretty attractive to me also. Just my opinion.

If it's in good shape, with what is there, there shouldn't be any problem off-loading it for parts. If the transmission is in good shape you might get some interest there because they had a reputation for second gear (I think) problems.

A good friend of mine bought one new in '79. He bought the blue one. They also came in a maroon. I liked it better than the later ones because the '79's had longer mufflers. He drove it alot and never had any problems until he bought a new BMW in '82. I remember riding the XS1100 and thought it was awesome. I thought the shaft drive was super compared to the chains we had back then. My friend sold his K3 to buy the Yamaha.

Remember riding one on a trip in the 80s and had a very clunky shifter, but ran like a train. Actually handled better than the 83 Venture that replaced it.

If you don't want it. I'll go pick it up for 50 bucks. Then I will take my beating from my wife for bringing yet another bike home. Odd I've actually seen a good many Yamaha 1100's around for almost nothing. They never seem to sell. I wonder if there is something I don't know.

Fix it ... try to sell it. Not selling -> abuse it

I think it's not a big seller ...
-18 - 22 year old folks -> to mutch cc (high insurance)
-22 - 30 -> might buy it as a spare bike
-+30 go mostly for more classic - higher $ bike's

You are right Brunow, I have never understood why there was never a real following for the XS1100. I felt it was an awesome bike. Fast, reliable and the luxury of shaft drive. JMHO

I'd be checking it out. The one I rode, really felt good, and I really liked it, even though it was
loaded with the fairing, bags and that UGLY King & Queen seat. I just couldn't afford it at that time.

I just got more info on the bike (I haven't seen it yet). The tank and carbs are missing, so if I buy this a bike to part out the rest of the bike better be in good condition! I'll probably drive over early next week and decide whether or not to bring her home.

Speaking of wives...mine will freak when she pulls into the driveway and sees yet another bike. Oh well!

Guy from KY had one for sale @ Barbers Vintage days, Sounded like a race car. I did not have the $2000 to walk away with it, but I would have bought it for that had circumstances been different. Pay the $50 and sit on it, and sing merry christmas to me...

A friend of mine told me that there are go kart enthusiasts that wedge the engine from the Yammie 1100 into their karts. Holy Moses, what a thought! Has anyone heard of this us for these motors?

I used to race an ItalKart. I can't imagine anything better than the 100cc Perelli . 18,000 rpm come on now. OK.......except the 125 shifter karts.

What would that 1100 engine weigh anyway. .........Man, talk about rear end drift

duster, what I was trying to say is my language isn't quite as "colorful"? Anyway, I wouldn't use quite the same choice of wording to describe it, that's all.
