The idea behind the trip was to ride from LAX to New Orleans following the rough route of the Easy Rider movie on 70s SOHC bikes. Worked out well as the pics on Axls site show - we had 10+ riders leave from LAX and Axl and myself made it back to Boston. 16 days, 5400 miles (mostly off highway for the LAX-New Orleans route). We had guys come from the UK (Scotland and England), Germany and across America.

Ive also done the x-country route solo in 1992 (Cape Cod to Grand Canyon and back) and in 2001 I rode my stock K4 from Boston to San Francisco via Wyoming etc and then down to Mexico and around the whole country and back to Boston (16,000 miles, 2 months) - details can be found here - click on Stories:

In 2003 I had my stock K4 in Europe for a European/Alps/Czech ride - 3 weeks, 6000 miles. No website for this sorry.

If you want to ride across country with other SOHCs I say go for it and organise it.I did this on the old SOHC mailing list and just asked how was interested then formed the Yahoo group to organise it. Was fairly easy. Let me know if you plan one...I could be interested :-)

The only problem with that ride is it didn't end to well in the movie

We didnt re-enact that part  .....although we did ride down that same road and even went to the diner (which is now a church!) -as we we were sitting on our bikes outside the diner/church...a local guy driving a pickup truck came up to us and offered us some camping in his garden, beers and bbq! Times have changed in the area! However, we politely refused just in case and continued at dusk to Baton Rouge getting covered in mosquitos (head to toe) on the way!! Was so bad could hardly see out visor!

Yea, I know bout skeeters, I grew up in that kinda country.
But I've seen pictures of Alaskan Skeeters that make our southern
skeeters look like midgets. some of those Alaskan and Canadian skeeters must
be on steroids

The thing to watch for is the black flies up north.  About the size of a Piper cub and they have teeth.  They DO bite and they DO draw blood.  Oh yeah.

I have had the fourunate luck to have driven cars & and driven a motor yacht in all kinds of places in USA  through the intracoastal waterway and the MississippiRiver and almost charted all of  FL, AL and GA NC SC VA MI LA TX CA UT
But on a SOHC 750 Honda from SFS to the east then down to Flagstaff via the Zion national Park area Page,  east to where ever and avoid all flies mozzies and all kinds of unusuall bandits.

NC is in too, love the blue Ridge Parkway, great roads indeed and a credit to the national parks people very helpfull to an Aussie who was LOST!!
I suppose the next thing to avoid is the Alligators on the Highway between Miami and thet town to the west Stuff Miami lets go the whole hog to Key West.

How much would one have to budget $$$ to make a trip like that?  Also, time factor?

I have three months off every year (June through August), I was considering a New England/Nova tour this comming summer.  I want to avoid the high heat of the summer in the southern states.

The 2004 trans-USA trip took 16 days although that was leisurely pace and not direct - about 300-400 miles/day average. Another trip I went from Boston - SF (my route 4200 miles) in 12 days so all depends.

Cost for either trip was really just gas money (mpg versus price of gas versus distance - for me 5000 miles = ~$250 assuming ~140miles/tank at ~$7/tank ), food money (say around $25/day - breakfast/lunch/dinner with drinks etc) and accomadation - I camp when I can or get <$40/night motel in emergencies or rain. Nothing fancy here :-) I think for the Easy Rider trip I did it for less than $800 (not including shipping bike to LA :-)).

I'm east coast- Annapolis, MD..  If you decide you want to do this in a group, sohc\4 riders format, I'd be interested too..  I've been meaning to check out the scenary up in the NE, and I've been wanting to take a longish trip like that for as long as I've had a streetbike!

Hey, I love company.  My best friend is from Annapolis, so I trust Terps.  If things work out like I hope they will, I'll be taking the trip, but possibly a shortened version.  I have been tracing some scenic routes through NY, VT, NH and ME.  All backroads with camping sites.

I'm in Baton Rouge, LA; and my cousin in NC just got a new beamer (R1200 or something) and we are in the early phases of planning a cross country trip in August of next year.  We want to hit sturgis on the way back, so we'r thinking of leaving the 1st part of August.  We are looking at a 2 week trip, so it won't be 100% leisure riding, there will be some interstate riding.  So lets keep this thread going and see what materializes.  I think it would be way cool to roll up to Sturgis with 10-20 SOHC's...
