Does anyone know about this particular bike and why it is one of the more desirable H.D. models??

Toy collector it depends on the model and year.

The XL was first introduced in 1957 with an overhead valve  V-twin of 54CI (883 CC)

The XLCH (Competition High compression) a year later had the tuned engine small headlamp, small tank, lower bars, and loud (free flowing ) pipes.

One of the most sought after models of the XL is the XLCR (C-Competition R- Race)introduced in 1977. Its the cafe sportster that pops up here once and a while when a newbie discovers that woah! harley built a cafe!

It consisted of a 1000 CC sportster engine in a XR750 derived frame.

Also popular is the XR1000 sportster introduced in 1983.

(yeah I know way too much about them huh?)  :D ;D

Looks rough but appears all there.

1972 was the first year for the 1000 CC engine. The extra displacement coming from 4.5 mm bore size increase.  Output was a claimed 60 bhp.  ;)

1971 was the first year for the wet clutch if thats of interest to you.

To qoute "The Ultimate Motorcycle Encyclopedia" by Roland Brown and Mac McDiarmid pg 438

By 1970 the Honda CB750 had arrived, Yet th XL had feeble brakes and lacklustre Performance.

Pick up a copy of "Harley Davidson Sportster" by Allan Girdler. It is an excellent reference book on all sportsters since 1957.
