Causes of no oil to the top end CB550
« on: March 12, 2016, 04:33:24 PM »
It appears that I am getting no oil or very small amounts to my top end.  I checked the tappet covers with the engine running and it does not seem to be any oil in there.  With the engine running I also noticed a bit of white smoke that came out of the covers when I took it off.  Where do I start and what do I look for.  I just recently rebuilt the top end.  The bike starts and Idles fine.  I also replaced the seals and spring in the oil pump.
Thanks,
Curt

Check oil pressure - with a gauge either in the switch hole or into the main oil gallery (remove a gallery plug, drill & tap 1/8 NPT, install a NPT brass plug afterward).
Oil to the head comes up through the barrels in galleries at either end. The control orifices are between the barrels and the main case. Once in the head, I'm not too sure how oil gets out to the cam bearings but it may just go to the outboard bearing and eventually lube the inboard ones by filling the cam trough. The cam lubes from that trough, oil splashing/spraying from the cam and tappets gets everywhere and provides tappet and guide lubrication. You can't really see into the trough from the tappet covers, but should see that the cam is wet and see oil being flung around when the engine is running.

If you have decent oil pressure but no flow to the valvegear, you will have to pull the head and barrels to check the orifice valves. These do get clogged by any crud that gets into the engine oil past the filter. Using silicon sealant in the engine is bad for that, bits extruded from sealing surfaces when torqued break off and block small passages in the galleries... those orifices for example. Poor maintenance that allows the oil filter to get really clogged will activate the filter bypass built into the filter bolt - that allows unfiltered oil into the main gallery.

If your oil pressure is super low above idle you can have enough to trip the pressure switch (~5psi) but that's not enough to reliably oil the engine. You may have assembled the oil pump or its pressure bypass incorrectly?

Thanks Bodi,
When I had the top end off I checked all those barrels at either end the jug and head and they were open.  I ran a wire through them and air.  I took the pump off again today and I checked it over and it seems to be working fine.  I filled the pump with oil and manually turned it and it seemed to pumped oil.  When I pulled the engine from the bike I did not remove the oil pan.  Could it be possible that the oil sending unit in the pan is clogged?  I will check the oil pressure in the switch hole I have easy access to it.  What type of gauge do I hook up to it?
Thanks,
Curt

The oil pickup screen in the sump can get blocked - my 500's camshaft sprocket shed all its plastic dampening material and it all ended up in the sump where it and the sludge in there damned near totally blocked up the oil pickup screen!

That is what I will do then is Check that screen in the oil.  I have a new screen for it that I bought of a member here on the forum.  Thanks for the help.

I removed the oil pan and there was some sludge in the bottom.  When I slid the oil strainer off it appeared that it was full of oil meaning that the screen was clogged and it was holding oil like a cup.  I cleaned the pan and replaced the screen hopefully that helps with the oil pressure.  Next question, when I replaced the oil filter I do not remember there being another spring or plug that went along with the oil filter bolt. (parts #11 and 12) I will pull the filter today and check.  Could this also be a cause of no oil to the top end?  As I mentioned earlier I made sure all the oil holes leading to head were clear when I reassembled, oil pump seems to be working, any suggestions to check while I have the oil out and the pan off?

Just curious if the oil light turned off when you started it? If so your oil pump is probably working. Pull the cam cover and hit the starter for a few seconds. You should immediately see oil coming from the underneath the ends of the cam shaft.

I believe 11 and 12 are part of the filter cover bolt. As SB says they normally can't be taken out. The filter kit should come with filter, two o-rings, a spring, and washer. Use that diagram to make sure they go back in the proper sequence.

Thanks for the reply's guys.   The oil light never went off.  The oil pump is rebuilt, cleaned the oil pan and put a new screen in, made sure the filter was put back on properly.  The bike had a frozen engine, had sat forever, and now it starts right up.  I need some advice, do I continue to mess with the pump or do I take the top end apart again and start over.  I would love to ride this thing this summer.  Give me some input which direction do I go?
Thanks,
Curt

do you have that rubber oil line( marked pos 5)..if that not is korrekt..air gets in the screen filter housing..and you can not get oil suckt up in the oil pump..
is the pump rotating..test for broken shaft..
