78 550 Aitbox woes
« on: March 14, 2016, 04:14:55 AM »
Hello all, so I finally got my carbs back on and got the plenum attached. I went to install the air box and I seem to have run into a snag as the air box is sitting far lower than where it attaches to the frame. If anyone has a picture of how the Aitbox bolts up other than the parts diagram that would be great.
Here's a reference pic. Also when I received the bike it had pods so I had to find an airbox, but found one that came off a 78 550.

Its not the best close up picture. if you want wait until tonight i can grab a better pic at the shop. Otherwise its for the rest of the hive mind to help with. mine is a 78 550K

your airbox doesnt quite look like its off a 78 550. seems weird, but it could be the perspective.

the airbox may be the same actually. your plenum is sitting waaaaay low though. Maybe wrong boots or plenum? that seems like its off by a mile.

maybe after a long period of time with pods fitted (and no rear mount to hold the weight) the inlet rubbers have allowed the bank to sag? If you pull up on the carbs can you get the mounting bolt in?

It looks like you have the wrong bracket that attaches to the frame member. It should be taller. Did you mix them up maybe? It's easy to do the first time you take everything off.

I went through and looked at all the brackets I had. I did find the taller one you spoke of and will give that a shot. Hoping to get a good picture of the airborne and brackets from a member. Also the boots that go from the rear of the carb to plenum are new as well as manifold to front of the carb. The rear ones are a ply able poly from a board member and not the harder rubber kind.

Here is how my airbox lines up with major frame components. I have the soft pliable boots that go from the plenum to the carb intakes. But it all sorta fell into place with the right brackets.
