CB550 Throttle Issue
« on: March 15, 2016, 12:24:31 PM »
Hello all, so I've searched and can not find a similar post to my problem. I replaced both the push and pull cables on my 78 550 with new motion pro cables. The old ones were original Honda cables. The issue I have is the top cable (I believe push) seems like it's too short. However when putting new vs old the new are slightly longer with the sheath, but same length cable wise. Not sure what's going on, but it's frustrating. Any and all help appreciated.

I alsace sure to replace the like cable for the new so I'm sure the cables are I'm the right spot. It seems as though if I did get the push cable attached it would be way to tight.

If you study p.49 of the parts list http://www.honda4fun.com/pdf_parts_list/pdf_spac500-550/CB500-550_K3-K4.pdf, you'll find that Honda had different cables for different (height) handlebars. Could it be that Motion Pro has mixed up?

I think you hit the nail on the head. If the new casing is longer than the original that will cause your problems. FWIW The numbers to the "A" cable are different from the old series (74-76) to the new series (77-78) of 550.

I have this same problem with my CB550 resto. The casing on the new MotionPro cable is maybe 1/4" too long (there is not enough cable sticking out of the sheath to connect it.

I used my old cable in the meantime.

Please advise if you find another part number that works for this.

Well it seems the stock cables worked just fine. Put them back on and lo and behold they fit! I'll have to source some new stock Honda cables. Thanks for all the help! Also included pictures of the motion pro cables. Nor sure if anyone can use them.

Interesting. I just installed a set of Motion Pro's on my CB550k. Stock handlebars and PD46C's. Never had any issues getting the cables on.

I ordered them from 4into1, and here are the specs according to them.

Throttle Pull: 45.5" total length - 39.75" housing - 5.75" slack
Throttle Push: 45" total length - 41.75" housing - 3.25" slack
Clutch Cable: 53" total length - 49.5" inner housing - 3.5" slack

Motion Pro part number: 02-0005 (clutch), 02-0155 (pull), 02-0156 (push).

This comes up from time-to-time because of the similar nature of the cables between the PD early and late carbs. On the 750, it is the difference between the non-PD and the PD carbs, and has the same problem.

The carbs that have the "drawspring" that closes the throttle uses the pull cable with the shorter length core. The carbs with the integral clockwind spring(s) for return use the longer-extending cables.
