750 K0 fork and brake service
« on: March 14, 2016, 09:38:38 PM »
A fork gaiter split on my old stocker, I changed the fork oil last year and intend to do it again. There is a small front end rattle I haven't found yet, what should I be looking for and is there anything special about the K0 forks to check?

The caliper is cleaned out and working well but the pad friction's nothing to brag about, it's all original but stopping is more important. right?
I'm thinking an organic type would be easy on the rotor. Also since it's all original and clean I sanded but left in the rear shoes and  now they squeal. Besides the new shoes, lube the pivots and scuff up the drum again, anything else?
 I did wheel bearings already.

Don...when you come to a bumpy road lightly apply the front brake. If the rattle stops it is the caliper bracket bouncing up and down at the hinge pin. There was a tech bulletin on the issue which says to add a small shim between the pin and the caliper bracket. Regarding the squealing...I did the same sanding as you and have no squealing.

Can you describe the rattle a little more?

To fix this problem in the K0-later bikes (up through the K2), Honda cut a slight recess in the top of the pivot pin's hole in the swinging arm and inserted a tiny O-ring. If yours has the recess in there, you can just install a new O-ring, as it probably broke and disappeared. If not, it has to have a thin (usually hand-made, from brass sheet) shim  installed instead.

Another place that may rattle: if the brass bushings in the top of the fork have worn, because they sat dry for too many years and then were pressed back into service without being polished first, they let the front end clunk on small bumps. I have some brass, am planning on making some more of these bushings this summer - my K2 has too many miles on them now, and these bushings have oval holes in them now.  :o

It's more of a clunk as Hondaman described. I'll check both possibilities.
It's a 9,500 mile bike now I'd like to think the brass is good but I know age has a lot to do with it also. I planned to keep the odometer under 10K but it wants me to ride it.
