Bad day working on the bike.
« on: March 15, 2016, 02:45:06 PM »
Alright guys, wasn't feeling too great and I guess it was a bad idea to work on the bike. Granted this my first project and I understand there will be mistakes, it still sucks. So here's where I went wrong, I tried splitting the cases on my 1973 750 today. And I was successful. But while attempting to remove the shifter bearing retainer (I think that's what it is called) I broke it. Amateur mistake. Cylinder block is almost off too, cylinder 4 is still stuck. Decided to encourage it off with some tapping on some wood with a mallet. Making sure it was going up even and not messing up the studs, all is good. Wood splintered and went up and broke the bottom fin. Decided it was best to quit while I was behind. Anyone know where I can find a new shifting bearing retainer? Thanks

Thanks guys. So far so good, happy with the progress. Gonna keep going. Quick question, can you measure oil clearance on the crank bearings all at once with plastigauge, or does it have to be done one at a time?

Nah, you can do them all at once.

The rod bearings of course need to be done one at a time.  Be careful not to rotate the crank or the rods while torquing things back down, or you'll have to re-clean and start over.
