Thoughts Price of Unfinished Project Bike
« on: March 14, 2016, 07:12:14 PM »
  Hi All,

Was going through the local Kijiji bike adds and came across 76 750 (F I think).  Its unfinished, looks like it may have a few non original part (aside from the seat pan and clip ons).
He says it hast run since the motor was rebuilt, but didn't mention how long ago that was.  Lost the title, and the tank will need a "mild" de-rusting and re-coat.
I asked what he was looking at for an asking price and he said $1100 CAD.  Any thoughts on the asking price?  I don't seem to see a ton of them for sale around here, so not a lot to base it on geographically. Not sure if I would pay that for something that requires that much work.

If the engine was done right, it's a deal.  If not, there is little of value there.  ...and if the engine was done right, why would he not finish the bike?
If it works good, it looks good...

 Stev-o,

That would be fair, but he did the dirty and added another 1 and some zeros!

Sean,

My guess is he got bored, busy, or just doesn't appreciate rockin it old school like!  Not being sure what went on inside those cases leaves me skeptical.  Bummer!

Often the cheapest bikes are the most expensive. If it needs just a few things  why are they selling without completing it?  Do your research before buying a deal ;D ;D  looks like mess and they didn't care about it.  Some times black painted rims is due to rusted rims.  Buyer beware ;D ;D ;D

Im from Toronto and we have a similar bike scene and bike prices. To me and based on Toronto prices that's a $400-$600 parts bike.  I personally would never buy something that molested to restore to original or near original. Now if you want to do some sort of a custom where your not using original or reproduction parts it may be acceptable for that. But in all honesty you can likely find a better starting point for a better price and you will have alot less into it overall.

My advise go find Ottawa's "bikes and coffee" meets and start talking to people someone will have a bike or know someone who has one and you will likely do alot better that way.

heres a good starting point:

Six low-res photos, two of which are duplicates, means he hasn't figured out how to use a camera, so I would question his ability to figure out an engine rebuild.  :)

That sucking sound you hear..... It's from you wallet!

Parts bike at best and I would keep looking. A really nice unmolested original 750 was on Kijiji last fall in the GTA for around $1700. I don't restore these bikes myself, yet this one was close and kind of tempting. So they are still out there.
This one walk away!

Cheers.

Yup, Parts Bike, and even then, what parts? I would have serious doubts about that motor.

Parts bike.  You're gonna have to drop some coin to get that bike roadworthy.
I got my titled non-runner for $700, tuned it up and rode it for a year...sold the engine for $400, and bought a better engine to rebuild for $100.
So in total, ive spent about $4k on my budget build, and I did all the work myself  ::)

In Ontario at least, no title wouldn't be an issue at all, to register without the previous permit you just need a bill of sale and sign an affidavit. Then again, we don't actually have titles here, just registrations, known as 'permits'.

If the motor's been checked out and rebuilt, then sure, $1000 would be a reasonable price, it's certainly likely a rebuild cost more than that. If not, you'll have to dive in, and that means at *least* a gasket kit and a whole lotta work.

  Thanks Guys,

Most of your thoughts pretty much echo my own.  I was willing to pay a few hundred for a project, not a grand or more.  He has since posted $1000 on the add.

Me thinks I will let that one go.

Thanks for all of the input.

Garage Guy Chris,

Thanks for the links
